Yeah, pre amps can often kill the sound quality on pups that sound fantastic used in passive mode!

really digging my squier CV mustang bass - now thinking of trading in my almost new gretsch junior jet II and buying another squier mustang to load with flats so I'll have all my basses (no pun intended) covered! anyone else loving their squier? i love the 1.5" nut width and the neck shape and have no interest in the PJ setup so I'm grateful the squier is in the CV series and super nice! I did swap the stock strings with vintage GHS boomers and installed a .10 orange drop cap in place of the factory .0473 but everything else is wonderful

I really like my Squier CV Mustang mucho now and hopefully I'll like it even more after I also install some improvements. Ultralight tuners just arrived, plus LaBella MUS flats. All I gotta do now is make the time to install everything... (-The Ol' Lady has many, many honeydoo jobs and she keeps bugging me about how one can't retire from already doing nuthin!) -(&*%#*
%@#!!!)Anyway, just like you I didn't want yet another PJ (they seem to be everywhere now!) so for us I think it's a nice bonus that the Squier CV version of the Mustang is less expensive (and cooler!) than the Fender PJ one... Yas!!

Those look cool, I was hovering over the buy button for one but hesitated. Then the next time I looked the price went up $30 so ba k to hesitating. For now my Musicmasters are my workhorses.

I much prefer either a single P style split pickup [which includes legacy Mustang pups], or a pair of identical humbuckers of one shape or another - anything which cancels hum.
Furthermore, IME, two humbuckers interact better electronically if/when you are running both together [especially if passive models], not loading each other's signal down as much as a PJ or some other dissimilar pairing would generally do.

Do the strings go thru the body on that model ?
If so, then there is a special set from LaBella for Mustangs like that.
It has 'MUS' in the product number.

Speaking of the Gretsch Junior basses like the 2220's, have you ever noticed how many are up for sale in the used market? Seems to be a ton of them on Reverb or Ebay. I had one for awhile but sold it because I just found I wasn't playing it very much, nothing wrong with it.
@WI Short Scaler yes same here plays and sounds great but I found the thunderous low end more suited for rock rather than the Americana i play
On my MIM Mustang PJ the strings do not go through the body so the strings I mentioned are not through the body.
I use D'Addario Chromes on mine and get a nice deep tone. I also recommend Dunlop flats. Both brands sound good on any scale bass I've put them on.
Anyone using a Gator Pro-Go guitar bag for the Mustang PJ?
I know they fit the short scale Stingray fine when you take the extra padding out of the bottom, but can't quite remember if the Mustang fits.

I am! It's a great fit. With the stock tuners, the g-string one sometimes turns a bit but I don't think there's any real pressure on it. With the HB10 lollipops I put on, there's even a bit more room and they stay put. The padding is superb all over while the bag weighs nearly nothing.
A question for Mustang owners.
Why does the Mustang bass have a flat back instead of a contoured back ?
I’m a big fan of short scale bass’s and currently own 2 short scale SBMM bass’s that obviously do have contoured backs.
And of course own several P-Bass’s as well.
Last year I purchased an American Fender Mustang, I loved the Mustang but found it a bit uncomfortable to play because of the flat back so I returned it.
Sorry if my question is stupid but I’ve just always wondered why the Mustangs are made with a flat back ?

I bought a well padded $39 CDN "Donner" bag off Canadian Amazon for my Jag short scale. It is surprisingly well made for the money. They had a less padded one for $29 CDN, but I splurged for the sawbuck upgrade. It fits the Jag perfectly. I assume it would fit the Mustang as well. I could check if anyone cares.
I don't know why either but I wish it did have contours. A much less costly Squier Jag does and is/was much more comfortable. As much as I like my Mustang, I love my Jag for that reason.
