Fender Mustang Club

So I have been playing my mustang and there was something missing from the tone, so I have been going through my selection of pickups mostly Squier and some unknown brands. When I forgot I had these pickups. They sounded like crap in the bass (Fender Precision Lyte) they came out of. The bass originally had a preamp which I still have. However they sound fantastic in my mustang without the preamp. Plus they look amazing!

Hey all! I recently picked up two Mustang PJs, one used and one new. The new one is the Chicago Music Exchange special edition in black with tortoise guard and maple neck. The other, I got on Reverb- the previous owner refinished the body in metallic green with a set of competition stripes- it looks great!

I dropped a DiMarzio Model PJ set in the green one, and I am likely going to leave the CME bass stock, with the exception of some ultralight Hipshot tuners.

I have a set of SD Quarter Pounders kicking around and was wondering if any of you have experience with the QPs in the Mustang PJ. What do you think?

I will post some pics soon, and I’d like to join the club!

I gave it a try. Disclaimer - my recording and playing isn't up to snuff. I just did a little simple playing of a couple bars for each setting:

1 -the 3TS Mustang pickup in standard placement with tone up for comparison
(maybe none of my examples sound like the Mustangs we know and love. Sorry 'bout that) - :laugh:
They sound better to me while playing them, than they do listening to my recording of them. That's not their fault though.
2 - 3TS Mustang pickup in bridge position with tone down
3 - same with tone up
4 - same but playing over the Mustang pickup in the bridge position

5 - the black Mustang with both pickups and tone down
6 - same with tone up
7 - black Mustang with just the lower two pickup halves - tone up

It sounds like a lot, but the whole thing is just over a minute long. For an extremely rough idea of the variations.

Great! Thank you for taking the time to do this. And no need to issue a disclaimer on your playing either. Those double-stop bits are pretty cool. :)

I think I like #6 the best of the lot, but you've got tons of choice here.

What's the wiring on the 3ts? Stacked V/T V/T?

Yes - they're both double stacked V/T's.
The last 3 quick clips are the black one with the pickup halves spaced far apart.
As you can tell, it sounds quite a bit darker than the 3TS.

I came across a sweet deal on a quarter pound pj set SPB-3/SJB-3 and dropped them in and the difference was phenomenal!
They seem to balance better provide a stronger volume and tone than the others I was able to experience. Now this my personal opinion and ear only. But the major plus was I could hear my J pickup which I couldn't before. I have read a few dissatisfied posts on the quarter pounds but on the whole I am extremely happy with the results. The only negative I could mention is when using the p & j together to my ear is a bit much. But since the group I am in pretty much stick to classic rock and alot of blues there is not much call for the combination.
If you would like you could refer to my previous posts # 501, 504, and 516 that I placed during the installation process. Just to save you some searching time.

I also have QPs in my PJ. I can't compare to the original pickups as they were already installed when I got it 2nd hand. I spent a lot of time raising and lowering the pickups to get the balance between the P and J how I wanted it and now play almost exclusively with them both on. Lots of P thump, with a bit of edge from the J. Suits our 60s garage music well.

Actually the intonation is way out. Gonna try and bring it in otherwise yep time to swap.

Sux though cause the string through puts a kink in the string so can't really on-sell. Ph well.
