Sorry about the lag on the pics. It had slipped my mind (what's left of it) that I had changed to Roto 77's on the Mustang and the ball silk are half the length of the Dunlops and come no where near the saddles on the Kickaß$ bridge. As this is the FMC I will leave the other bass out of the discussion. I also believe I just answered my own question. I do appreciate the input greatly although I did really miss dmt's tough questions. LOL. ;{)

I actually lean towards the Roto's but mainly for comfort. My RA and numbness really affect whether my fingers get cut. The Roto's are smoother and have absolutely no edges what so ever. But the Dunlops are really close for this physical issue.
Btw those 2 are sho purdy. I don't envy the choice you have.

I am sorry I didn't address the 2nd part of your question. The Dunlops seem to be a bit brighter to these old military exposed ears which is nice when we do 12 bar but nothing that can't be adjusted with the equalizer on my amp head.

I was a little worried the tort would be too much on the red one, but I like it. There are so many things I really like about the P/J’s, and the ease of changing the pickguards is one of them. (On my CIJ, it’s a little more difficult since the pickup is mounted on the pickguard.) I have the original tort back on my CIJ too, but here it is with a pickguard I got for a specific gig a while back: Now that I re-read your post my curiosity is peaked. What kind of sound change did you get with silk over the saddles? This is for future reference for string change on the PJ if necessary.

The strings had a dull tone and little sustain. Almost as if they were muted with foam. I know there's a controversy over the effect of silks on the saddle, and maybe it's the thickness of the silks or other attributes that account for the differences. It's been a while, but I think these were Chromes.
Silks can easily be trimmed back to get out of the way: put a drop of superglue right behind the spot you're going to trim, then use a sharp (razor) blade to gently trim the offending silk. It'll cut and remove easily, and the glue will keep it from unraveling further back.
I bought a set of Roto Flats for my Mustang. The silks on the E and A string did overlap the bridge saddles and I thought they sounded awful. I’ll retry them with the silk cut back and see how they work then. I’m using EB Cobalt Flats on a couple of other basses (34”) and love them!

Do they pretty much drop right in, without having to do some 'fitting' work?
Size-wise they drop in. However, the screw holes are flanges at the bottom of the pups and they don’t have the guides running beside the covers, so they require much shorter screws. If you buy new they come with. I can send a pic if you’re interested.
