My next Mustang will be my first.

MY #1 issue will be that I need the 1+5/8" nut width like most P basses have, and only the 3 most expensive current models seem to have that - the American, the JMJ, and the Vintera.

Then of course, gotta find a lighter weight one and put some flats onto it, and maybe those tuners.

I'd also be curious, historically speaking, to know which of the PAST production models of Mustangs had the wider nut.

As for something similar to lollipops, do they still make Creamsicles, y'know, orange coating on vanilla ice cream, on a stick ?

Who knows, mayhaps they ARE the US models, in which case it would be to their BENEFIT to point it out.

After all, there ARE some sellers [thru eBay, as I posted earlier] who clearly offer the USA Ultralites for the price that Musician's Friend asks for their unspecified units.

So after a few weeks, I picked up "Fred" the Fender Mustang today. Tone rider P pickup, Fender hi mass bridge, new bone nut and stacked pots. I`m well pleased and it plays really well. The only thing is what to do with the hole where the switch was? Answers on a postcard please to the usual address!

Unusual maybe, but I'd consider gluing on a small, flat artificial gemstone. It would catch the light interestingly, and could be gotten for spare change.

Just noticed you can`t see the stacked knobs but they are stacked!

Put the switch back, but don't wire it to anything.

It can be a 'Producer Switch', like Leland Sklar actually ADDED to one of his basses for studio work.

Alternately, put it back and wire one position as a 'Kill' switch, across the output jack, to maintain your settings when you take a break.

With 3 positions, it could even be BOTH of those things.

I was able to weigh the 4 stock tuners and hardware from my Mustang PJ today.
They were........................... 13.00 oz. (accurate to +/-.03 oz).
4-Hipshot 3/8 Mini Clovers.......6.36 oz. (according to manufacturer's web site).
Weight Savings.......................6.64 oz.

I used these: Hipshot HB6C-3/8 Bass Tuning Machine Set Regular Chrome

The posts were a little narrow for the holes in the headstock, so the tech padded them with masking tape for a snug fit. Also, he had to drill new holes in the back of the headstock since they’re not direct drop-ins.

Not sure if the tuners or the bridge contributed more to eliminating the neck dive, since it was done all at the same time... but, I’m happy with both!

Pretty sure that getting 1/2" HB6 Hipshots instead of 3/8"s should eliminate any need to 'pad' the posts? -At least I certainly hope so, as thas what I ordered!
Hmmmmm....-not so sure now, y'know?
-But will sure find out when the darn things get here I guess...

I was looking around and saw this image for the new Performer Mustang Bass range. I like the colours. I'm guessing the redesigned bridge is so it lines up better with the J pickup. I was hoping Fender would just release new, non-relic colours for the JMJ, but it's hard to argue against more versatility. View attachment 3223114

I dunno much, but this new (and expensive!) Performer series "Mustang" looks to me like a bass that doesn't know what it wants to be? To my mind a PJ Mustang has a tried and proven PJ format, and a classic Mustang has classic Mustang pups. -What good comes from mixing the two together?
Also read somewhere that the J on the Performer cannot act like a humbucker balance with its small pups because those pups are already doing that for each other, so the J might be pretty noisy...

That's one of the 3 current models which suit my hands because of having the P width nut [1+5/8"], the JMJ and Vintera being the other 2.

I too would consider the JMJ if it had a regular finish, instead of this relic'd BS, though apparently its pickups are above average, SD having had a hand in their design.

As for J pickups humming when soloed, yes, if they do not explicitly state otherwise, then count upon them humming, and being the most expensive current Mustang model, one would think that Fender could afford to address the issue and advertise "Look, Ma, no hum !" as a stock feature.

The same marketing strategy could apply with American models of the Jazz bass.

Unfortunately, the days of traditional P and J basses [and their predictable specs] are behind us.

And I notice from your last few posts that you seem to have been combing this thread for further info.

With all of the variances in post hole diameters of basses these days, and even some tuners of the same brand not being of identical nor standard spec for that hole [Hipshot HB7 and 1/2" Licensed Ultralite being two examples of such a deviation, IIRC], the only way to be sure would be to remove one of the stock tuners and measure the hole in the headstock with a caliper, prior to ordering replacements.

I couldn't do that. The artificial gemstone reflecting light would cause me to stare at it, lose my concentration and take me back to the '60's .

This unique combo of mustang p pickup and j creates a great bass,strange looking but very versatile.
If needed It has very clear and precise tones unlike most tubey and thumpy shortscales.

Its The only pj that sounds like a jazz with both pickups on,the small p pup is key.

No pj is hum free unless the jazz pop is noiseless.

OK... I never played a Fender Performer Stang so maybe I would like it's sound also (although I'm more of a P-bass guy than a J). That's if I could get past it's mixed-bag looks, but of course that varies greatly with everyone's taste...
But I do very much like the way the new Squier CV Mustang I got looks and sounds (which everyone of course doesn't). With one end of the tone knob giving an 'almost P' sound and the other end coaxing out an 'almost upright' sound it's not exactly got much "J" there, but is still very, very sweet to my ears!

True...I was concerned about the Gold/Silver (chrome) distortion problem which has been well documented at TalkBass. I've actually found that the reflection of the Gold into the Silver (chrome) causes a musical, pleasant type of even-order distortion...At least to my old ears. But DON"T reflect Silver into Gold! That will cause odd, high-order, harmonics which will cause your bass to sound like it's solid-state, and might cause hearing damage and hypertension. (and if you believe this, I have a $64,000 P-bass to sell you!)

That's gold on that bass? Geez, at my first quick look I thought it was rust! I guess it was just the reflected light from all the chrome...

OK, in the Accessories classified here on TB I just dropped the price for a No-Mod Thumb Rest for Mustangs to $25 incl shipping. And it fits both the Classic and the PJ styles..
