This makes sense to me. Generally love my vintera mustang, but the neck dive and lack of contours grates on me. Thinking of flipping it for Sandberg Lionel!Ok so I am sadly passing my Mustang bass on, as much as I love it in most ways the lack of contouring is making it painful to play

Seriously though, mayhaps please you would post pics of yours, looking at those two contours from the perspective as if you were playing it sitting down, and just glanced downward at the body - also one of the rear of the body.
Maybe such pics are out there, but I've so far not noticed any.
This info site page for example seems to make no references to contours, neither to what nut width nor type of fretboard to expect from any given year of instrument production.

Oh wow. This is actually my dream Mustang. I’ve been eyeing up a custom Sandberg Lionel which I would do in natural with a maple neck. Looks like a beauty!
Here´s my Pawn Shop Mustang along her 5 and 6 strings big sisters, just missing in the picture My Fender Deluxe Jazz Bass (4 strings) and the Kala U-Bass baby.

For years I have toyed with the idea of mating a Mustang neck to a Strat body, mainly for that reason - the belly cut and the arm contour, plus it would look cool. Someday.My 1977 has a belly cut and arm contour and is super comfy, you should look out for one of those

I was considering that model, due to some of its other specs.
So do ANY of the current models have the body contours, or must I seek original vintage ones to get the cutaways ?

Not only do those show exactly what I wanted to see, they are also better pics than what you poster earlier, and that is one nice slab of wood which they used to make the body !

It doesn't help with your need for a wider neck but, I will always keep my Squier Jag. SS, contoured body, easy upgrades and what used to be an inexpensive price. My two favourites (cdn) now are the Jag and the MIM Player P. But, that is just me

Yes, I recall.
I have a user-further-modified Squier VM Jag SS bass [previously mentioned somewhere on TB, more likely in their club thread], and I do plan to give it a chance at some point when gigs become more plentiful, I anticipate sometime next year.
And depending upon how THAT goes, I might try to get and Franken-transplant a Squier Bronco neck onto it, which if I can get the pocket to fit, and move the bridge if necessary, would yield a 1.60" nut width AND a Maple fretboard.

I would think that one of the current Squier Mustang bass models would be a candidate, as it would be the least costly potential loss, if the result was not optimal.
Are there not also places which sell new necks and bodies of Fender/Squier instruments [Stratosphere comes to mind], mostly bodies, some of which are already factory seconds due to small finish flaws, and which might be the smallest investment, if a person was to embark upon such an adventure in woodworking ?

I have been compiling a table of specs for various Fender and Squier short scale basses, including neck pocket dimensions - still a work in progress though.
It might be doable - I will review.
I briefly owned a Bronco bass several years ago, but resold it before I got the Jag and the idea.
Who knows ?
If the Jag neck is deeper [as many folks report it to be, and I think that I've noticed by looking at it], this might compensate somewhat for it being narrower at the nut.
We'll see....

I've still got a SS Jag (had 3 of them).
Just by looking at it, and from the 1.5 nut, you'd think it would feel the same as the CV Mustang.
But the SS neck feels just a tiny bit better to me for some reason.
I haven't measured it, but I think it might be a hair thinner from the fret side to the back of the neck.
Just talking about the neck here. The Jag has contours, but the Mustang body seems just as comfortable for me.
This listing ended who knows when, but it's got a tummy cut.
Might be worth contacting the seller to see if they are still making these?
