and yes I suppose that the nice part of the relic finish on the JMJ is I don’t feel bad removing some more paint.
It might be a bit much for some people, but hey they get to do whatever they want with theirs!
The ergonomics are more important to me than keeping the relic finish “pristine” :D

I would reckon that a person could do the same thing with most 5 string sets, IF they are available in the desired scale length.

That brings me to another thought.

Just how many makers DO offer 5 string sets for short and medium scale bass guitars ?

It looks like Dunlop does, in flatwounds at least :

Products - Strings - Bass - Dunlop

However, I was also just on the D'Addario site, and they seem not to list Half Rounds anymore for those lengths, never mind the number of strings for a moment :

XL Half Rounds | Semi-Flat Wound Bass Guitar Strings | D'Addario

Two well-known retailers' sites where I shop also reflect the same reduction in choices.

They still list Chromes in short and medium scale, though only for 4 string, which may not be a change from the recent past :

Hmmmm....

EDIT :

Possibly the question which I ought to be asking is whether there are more, or less choices of strings in general being offered, specifically wrapped for short and medium scale basses, now than in the past ?

I have a fam friend who works at daddario and supposedly theyre in process of a big lineup change for the strings so they could be Discontinuing or updating some old versions of things in anticipation of rollout.

One of them had a 50% off promo during December, on nearly ALL D'Addario strings, including Half Rounds for bass, and so far have not shown new stock of the short and medium scale versions of those.

Fortunately, GHS Brite flats seem to still be available in short and medium scale, and those were what I last bought in that type of string for short scale anyway.

Thom Yorke (Radiohead) has a 3 piece side project in rehearsal for some upcoming shows. Always cool to see the greatness of the little Mustang making an appearance in the wild.

And not too expensive either.

But I'll bet a doughnut to a dollar that dealers in Canada will not be getting them, same as with the shell pink Broncos and Mustangs, and as y'all know, Fender prohibits dealers located everywhere else from shipping their products to Canada, even when none of our dealers will be having any. :sour: :confused: o_O

That all said, I wonder when they will make an authentic circa 1970s reissue Squier Mustang bass, complete with with Maple fretboard, 1.625" nut width, and maybe also a natural finish on the body ?

Will I live to see the day ?

One of THOSE, regardless of the corporate politics, I would find a way to snag ! :woot:

I really wanted one of those but I checked with CME and it seems the normal weight these days in 8 pounds and with my issues I'll just keep my white Squier CV Mustang that weighs in at 6 pounds and 8 ounces and be envious of the Lake Placid blue!

@HelpImaRock Who made the tort guard - looks awesome!

Mine is 8.5 pounds and I think it helps balance better than a lighter body would. Bought the pickguard on eBay from someone who took it off their Squier Mustang for another color.

I wonder whether the nut width is really 1.5" ?

Does anyone know what the nut width was on the original 60s Mustang basses ?

[not that they would necessarily be copying that spec for this bass, even though they ought to be]
