I had the joy of taking my Mustang PJ to a pair of sessions at the excellent West End Recordings (of Mastodon fame/notoriety) the last two days, along with my Ibanez 6-string bass and Sequential Take 5 synth, all along with the joy of laying tracks on the house Hammond B3 and Wurlitzer in my part-time keyboard duties. What a couple of days!
But as soon as I walked into the control room with the Mustang, the engineer and his assistant, a skilled bassist, both said Hell Yeah, and commented nearly in unison that they love shortscale basses for studio work.
One track ran octaves and fuzzes on a hard-driving set line, and the other was a clean soul/rnb vibe with plenty of space to work. And it did crush, and it was good.
