Fender Mustang PJ upgrades

View attachment 3329892 Finally got around to installing the Geezer Butlers. I ended up going with a Noll stacked pot for V/V and kept the existing tone pot. Hipshot bridge, Decoboom pick guard, and covered the switch hole with an Indian Head nickel. Currently has Fender round wound strings. Sounds and plays great!

I ended up grabbing a set of the EMG GZR-PJ's for my Mustang, and set it up Vol/Vol/output jack without the switch in the signal. I was experimenting with a couple of pickup combinations trying to get the balance tonally I was looking for... a growly low end with clear mids that sit in the mix without getting in the way of the vocals. This set does it. I always come back to the EMG GZR's. Gigged it tonight, and it just killed. I fricken love this bass.

Thanks. To be clear...you kept the 3 way Switch which isolates either pickup, or in the center position allows you to blend using the stacked vt pots. Is that right?
Do you happen to have a wiring schematic?
I got a wiring schematic via an email to Fender. Guy was very helpful and quick to respond. I’ve always hated pickup selector switches. They’re a constant source of grief and usually do not provide the tones I seek. It is much more useful for me to be able to use one pickup and add a little from the other pickup to pull in a little bite or dial in a little more beefiness depending on the situation. In order to avoid drilling a side hole I went with a stacked volume pot and kept the tone control and the jack that was factory when I installed the Geezer Butlers. The stacked knob was a Noll that I got from Bestbassgear.com. The bridge is a Hipshot Type A Brass. I did have to shorten the intonation screws to get it to work right for the short scale of the Mustang. The pick guard is from Decoboom.com. Thinking about adding racing stripes. Love this bass now. Plays and sounds fantastic!

Yes I did keep the 3 way. Only schematic I used was this one. https://p4.zdassets.com/hc/theme_assets/549136/200076499/019-0209C_SISD.pdf
It shows the wires coming from the Pickups to the pots. So I just made the Pickups wires (you will need jumper wires) go to 3 way switch from the switch back to the pots.

This is great! Thanks Pressman52.
I think you have hit on the optimum wiring for yhe PJ. I will give it a go once my new pickups arrive. DiMarzio Area P & J.

Can you please confirm if this package includes all the necessary accessories to install the Switchcraft 3-way toggle switch on my Fender Mustang PJ? The description says it also includes knurled nut and cap. I cannot find the deep round nickel nut separately from any UK online store. Invalid Link Removed

Another query. Which Switchcraft input jack you got? This one? Invalid Link Removed

Yes on the input jack. I believe the toggle switch should work but you may need some washers because the pick guard is thin.

Just replacing the toggle switch will do nicely As long as you’re buying a high quality switch. I actually did away with the switch on mine altogether and installed a stacked volume knob made by Noll. That way I have the ability to blend the pickups to my liking. Covered the hole with an Indian head nickel.

Hey all, found this forum recently and am deciding to put some geezer butlers in my bass, for simplicities sake I'd like to use emgs 3 way selector switch and just do the whole soderless thing. But im worried because theirs just says (standard gibson) anyone know if its short or long shaft? I thought I heard we need short staff for our mustangs

The geezer set comes with jazz bass style VVT parts. You need to get the solderless switch and a ?bus or something from EMG. I believe in another thread or pages back the individual who mentioned this said there wasn’t enough room stock to fit the solderless switch. I swapped out my pickups and switch and I had no clue how to solder before. Watched YT videos and did some practice first. It’s actually pretty easy for just switching pickups.

So Really Like this bass, the maple neck and sienna finish. Did some upgrades, sounds better than my JMJ now to my taste. Upgrades 1.Hipshot tuners (HB-10) 2.Seymour Duncan PJ Quarter Pounder set 3. Omega Bass Bridge 4. Zero Mod Thumbrest. 5. Put a MOJOTONE Paper in Oil Tone Cap in. 6. Switchcraft 3way Toggle Switch 7. Using Stringjoy Short Scale Nickle Roundwound Strings. 8. Maybe in the future a bone nut will see.

Note: All were drop in except the SD Quarter Pounder P Pickup, very Tight Fit had to file a little on the pickguard.
and the Zero mod will address on next post
