Fender Nate Mendel P-Bass

What release date are you talking about?they bumped back the release date AGAIN. it was December, then January, February 11, March 19, now April 22.
I have no love for the Foos. I have no love for Nate. I do like 70's P-Basses. I was kinda gonna buy one of these.
But now, no.
This bass intriges me.
I'm not a big Nate fan, I do like some of the Foo's songs.
But the neck shape, pickup, Badass bridge, thin finish, adds up to a nice playing and sounding bass.
If these are somewhat light-weight. I'm in.

jetbike, I apologize if my other post put a bad taste in your mouth... I'm sure it really is a nice p-bass... I love nitro lacquer finishes. I'm not usually not one to boycott a product or a piece of music because of the personal beliefs of the person associated with it. in fact, when it comes to the persons work rather than a product like a signature instrument, I often try and point out that the human choices and the art some one makes are two completely different things, and it's important to separate the art from the artist. In other words, I try not to let a celebrity's charity work or other personal beliefs get in the way of listening to their music or watching their movies.
For example, people rip into Ice Cube's music because he was in some really stupid kids movies. I think that his early hip-hop records are fantastic. The fact he decided to do some dumb movies to pay some bills doesn't change the fact that I think some his records are certified classics.
From what I understand, Nate's association with Alive & Well is his own and the band does not share his views... the band has been distancing themselves from the issue for 10 years now.
The singer in a band I used to play in, who I became close friends with, has HIV. He's been able to keep it very much under control. But If he bought into the Alive & Well rhetoric, he could very possibly be in rough shape right now. I suppose this makes me a little more sensitive about it.
Here's another way to look at it: It's not as if a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of his signature bass go directly to Alive & Well. That would be ridiculous. If there was some screaming deal on this bass, and I played right-handed instruments, I may look past my issues with Mr. Mendel and buy it.
Though ultimately,with all the P-basses out there in the world, it might work better for your conscience if you chose a bass that doesn't have Nate Mendel's name on it.
The first Foo Fighters record is a classic.
Good bass, (according to specs) nice neck. This is all that matters to me.
If somebody has purchased this bass, please report back as to the overall feel of it as compared to more standard spec Precisions. I've been wanting a slimmer necked P for a long while.

Well AZT turned out to be a complete disaster for everyone who took it, so it's not like Nate's support for Alive And Well came out of left field. However, things change a lot in the field of medicine, especially with a relatively new disease such as HIV/AIDS, and Nate no longer lists them as a charity he supports and hasn't since 2008 apparently.
Regardless, not liking a dude for believing something that you don't seems really silly to me. I'd have to dump all my friends if that were the case.
So about the bass...I'm not a fan of the color but it looks like a nice bass.

i'm consistently fascinated by the number of people that respond to posts about something they 'hate' or 'don't like.'

This reminds me of the people that said "if Ernie Ball offered a wide spacing Stingray 5, I'd be ALL OVER IT". Then when EB actually made an offer to do it, few stepped up to the plate.
LOL! Ya, I totally forgot about that till a couple weeks ago when I saw they got like 4 people to order one. Really easy to predict buying trends from this side of the desk, isn't it?
I thought it was something like 10-15, but I'm probably mistaken. It's still a paltry number and remains one of the greatest exposés of "put up vs. shut up" in the history of musical instrument manufacturing.
I got one, I like it. I have child size hands and it feels nice to me.

I like it except for the BAII. It's like a little monkey wrench (no pun) Fender likes to throw into otherwise great ideas.

From the angle of this photo, the neck looks almost as skinny as a jazz neck! That's too skinny for me... I just want an "athletic" precision neck, not the Kate Moss of P basses.
The nut width is almost like the nut width of the standard P bass and this picture does not show the shape of the neck.
The wish was father to the thought, right?!
