Ebony's great, hard as steel, I have a TF franklin wh an ebony board and it actually stands up to Roto RS66's.
Almost None More Blacker . . . . though for me, this with all black hardware might have been a little much. This would have looked idiotic IF they'd left the peghead face natural, just awful and jarring.
I always prefer ebony necks in most cases as it adds strength / stability to the neck, and sometimes if you have the ears and amp for it, a little extra top-end zing, but it's subtle if it's there.
If ya wanted a black PBass, there you go, and I prefer the chrome to the similar axe they sold a few years back with gold hardware.
But then, it's 'brother from another mother' IF you wanted a Seymour / Gotoh loaded PJ:

ESP's recent reissue of the 80's HairBand Special PJ Surveyor.
Those ESPs are killer basses. I bought one (in white w/ matching headstock) earlier this year. Originally I had planned to buy a Fender American Performer P Bass since I wanted a good quality, passive PJ. The Fender was pretty disappointing and it was pretty clear that the ESP was the better bass in every way. At the time, it also cost about $600.00 less than the American Performer.
The ebony board Player from Fender certainly looks interesting though. I wish more basses had at least the option for an ebony fretboard.
Although they sometimes have a very Japanese design language, their less confrontational designs are to me the most overlooked good basses out there. It would be hard to buy a better traditional-style PJ Bass in its price range.

Here is another 'brother from another mother'. The Lakland Skyline 4464 GZ (Geezer Butler signature model, with his signature EMG pickups). Lakland's John Pirruccello said at NAMM 2019:
"What can I say. It is very black. Can't get much more black than this" (1:11). A nod to Spinal Tap, I guess
I have the same bass and the same idea of one ply black 'guard and black control plate. I bought the 'Stang a couple of years ago shortly after they became available and immediately started looking for a black Mustang control plate. No luck so far. If you happen to find a source for black Mustang Bass control plates please post about it or PM me...thanks.
I also swapped in black pickguard screws and black pickup mounting screws. That alone made it look stealthier to me.

I'm in the same boat on a black control plate. I'm thinking either strip the chrome and get it powder coated or maybe paint it with epoxy paint. Either would be long wearing but I can do the epoxy paint at home. If I ever get a minute to order a plate…
But yes, if I do find a black one I'll post it up.
I just got back from GC. Saw they had one in stock and I've been looking at fretted 4 strings. I'm a huge fan of ebony so I had to check it out, she wound up following me home. I just need to decide if I want to drop in Delano or Fralins.
I like the stock, but if I replace I'm going to get one of those new Dimarzios with the shaved down brackets. The Billy Sheehan model maybe.
I just picked one of these black beauties up last night! My gosh, this is by far the nicest bass I've ever known. I thought I wanted a Jazz bass, but this P's ebony f-board with matching headstock lured me in. I want to say they put a better pickup in this "Limited Edition", compared to the "regular" Player Series that sell for $200 less. It sounds utterly amazing and thick and full! This bass plays so effortlessly too (anyone know what gauge strings come on these stock from the factory?)
