That is too cool that beauty must sound like Thunder man you are super creative this bass deserves a thread of its own.

I created it before I joined tb, and before I documented my projects as diligently as I do now. My original plan was to get a Moses carbon J neck for it, but the Saunders neck came up and started it rolling. I used it for a couple of projects where that big tone fit. Besides, I'm a T-bird guy from way back. :bassist:

As long as they'd fit - remember, they are both the same (bridge) size. I'd be curious to know if they would be a noticeable improvement. Not that they'd fit, but the original proprietary Kubicki Factor pu's are awesome w/his pre. A set came up on eBay awhile back but exceeded my limit and they rarely appear.

It looks like they are the same size I think I will experiment on another bass this one is perfect.

I agree, it would take the MO'W sounding decidedly better to consider swapping the originals. It's the only bass I own that I've left 100& original (aside from installing Dunlop StrapLoks) I have a Squier J w/same size pu's and I installed 2 Super 55 bridge pu's and the neck pu poles are aligned close enough (wait for it…) for Jazz! :laugh:

Kubicki Factor Bass Preamp 18 Volt (no affiliation)

These don't come up often. It's an 18v Kubicki, not a 9v Fender/Kubicki. The same as the F/K with another battery and another passive click - so, off/on, active boost, active, passive, passive. Sounds pretty much identical as I've owned both. Personally I prefer the F/K because I never use the passive mode and because of the extra juice (2nd 9v) the drop-off of active to passive is steeper so you really need to watch it if in passive mode at volume switching to active - could blow speakers if you're not careful to turn down the volume. The 9v version is plenty huge - so nothing lost there.

I saw that one are the controls vol/balance and bass/treble? Do those Boner basses have the same preamp as the pluses or do they share the preamps with the Cowpokes? I had a Cowpoke I think it had Fenders take on the Kubicki with a really cool bass boost.

I'm not certain, but it would be logical that the Fender version would be essentially the same on all Fender basses using it, from the FCS Kubicki's to the Cowpokes. The only other difference (besides ones mentioned) is the lack of the (3rd) switching pot. As in, only 2 stacked pots utilizing one default preset, probably the active click.

I've had this bass since the mid 90's. got it used at Steve's music in Toronto. It's traveled all over North America with me. I hadn't really paid too much attention to the differences except every time I need to buy a new case. I'm not a gear guy...I just liked the feel and tone this had for the price I found it for). I just finished wearing through another case and got to using the interweb, which has improved since 95 or so, to look for a case since my instrument doesn't fit the standard case (obviously) and found this thread.

Is there somewhere i should be looking for a case? or just grab a generic one and tweak it to make it fit (worked for 15 years...probably ok for another 15).

love the bass, wouldn't trade or sell it. we've gone through a lot together. always in tune, reliable intonation, punchy tone when you need it. hard to find anything else in the price range that can deliver.

Yep - totally underrated basses and nicely affordable to those of us who 'get it'. Fender made a molded hsc for these basses - but I would guess they would fit in an open interior (non molded) G&G style case also. The Fender cases pop up on ebay from time to time - I got this one for $100. Mine's a Jazz Plus, but the P should fit. (both 22 fret necks) If you find one on ebay just make sure it will fit. I'm guessing Road Runner cases (GC) would be worth checking out.

I just looked on ebay and there is one molded Fender hsc like mine and a number of others under $100.

A very unique Jazz Plus. Ad sez' maple/maple - but that body is ash. Still unique as the J+'s are all made of alder w/rosewood boards. I bet it would sound awesome!
