Hello, and thanks for a great thread.

Regarding the Lace Sensor, i'm pretty sure it is a split coil PU.

I had one die on me in a Jazz Bass Plus, and I dismantled the defective PU after replacing it.

Wow very cool pictures Ronnie I stand corrected then the pickups can't be the culprit in a noisy Jazz Bass Plus split coil with a barrier should be dead quiet?. I tend to keep the volume level on my bass low and I let the amp do the heavy lifting that could be why my Plus is quiet? Thanks again Ronnie great pictures what did you replace the pups with?

Man, I don't. I searched all over the internet for a couple days looking at how to do so, back in 2002. You do know about the mid boost in the control cavity, right? There's a tiny pot in there with a black phillip's thingy.

The Jazz Plus Deluxe was by far the best Fender I had owned. I always preferred the compression of the passive settings. If you play slap bass, you'll soon be spoiled by those Lace Sensor's..or whatever it is in those basses that hide tiny faults in technique. Even in passive, I think a good bit of what was under the hood was still used(caps, huge volume and tone pots). Also the bridge hardware is top notch. That's the only fancy Fender style bridge that I like better than the Leo Quan BAII. They put the same design bridge on some MIJ Fender's, but I doubt they were made with the same quality metal.

DO NOT mess with the neck angle adjustment. Some of the Jazz P Deluxe's of the time were semi-chambered and hidden with chunks of walnut(or some dark wood), in the corners of the neck pockets. I actually cracked the wood adjusting that angle too much. I was drunk and too aggressive with it, so it wasn't a defect of any kind.

Those basses are so very solid. Hang onto it dude! There aren't that many out there. I'll own another some day.

I tried some EMGs that came with the bass when I bought it, then I tried SD Quarter Pounders but realised that I liked the Lace Sensors most and bought a new set.

Also some pics of my bass:

Thanks for posting Ronnie_bas (black is beautiful!) Are you using black-coated strings? how do they sound?

We're starting to get some very helpful feedback from +Deluxe owners. I like the bass as is and didn't want to go replacing anything really so hearing that you and bassisgood4U preferred the Lace Sensors is good news. I would just like to subdue the hum/buzz if possible.
- I agree, the hardware is top notch. HM bridge by Schaller (great bridges - I just installed one of their bridges on my '93 American Standard "boner" J) and the (Schaller again) tuning pegs are top notch. (would you consider selling yours Ronnie?)

Let's see some more Plus Deluxes! :hyper:

I looked through my bag and the original strings on mine were something called Fender Dynamaxx 1200's the gauge was .45 .65.80.100 it's strung up with Ernie ball Slinky's but it looks like the original strings are in the bag.

Had some quality time w/the +Deluxe - what a special instrument! It really is unique as far as a Fender J goes. I can't think of another series Fender Jazz bass that rivals it. I can hear how it would be ideal for slap as Bassisgood4U said. I don't slap, but use tapping and the depth of rich tonal harmonics it produces is outstanding. Love it!

Here's a setting mix I dialed that I like;

bass; volume-full, pu selector-full bridge, bass-1/2, treble-2/3, active w/boost (1st click from off)

MXR bass d.i.+ ; bass-2:00, mid-4:00, Treble-5:00

Ampeg B-15N; volume 9:00, Treble-12:00, bass-5:00 (both ex-hi/ex-low off)

Fat but punchy and chocked full of harmonics (some brand of relatively new round-wounds) What's not to love?

I'm confused - it came with an additional set of Fender factory strings? I'm not certain Fender would have put a set of strings in a case when selling a new bass in '93. (or put the package in empty, see what I mean?) It sounds like a nice idea and maybe they do that sort of thing but I've never heard of it. So maybe in all those years someone put those Fender strings on and that's why you have the package.

I usually like .45/.65./85./.105

Nice settings I bet that sounds really sweet that B-15N can make anything sound good that's my dream amp.

My settings:

Bass: both pups full,volume 50%,bass 80%,treble 100%,active boost and internal mid boost at 100%

Meatsmoke Pre: volume,gain,bass,mids,treble, 50%
Swell B-Pro : volume 80%,gain,80% fat boost on,mid cut off

Mesa: bass slight cut mids and treble slight boost

The sound is rich and meaty I do a kind of tap slap with my index finger and it really sounds good. I love this bass the Slinky's are not new but they sound really good JIO my friend I think we hit the jackpot with these.

I've consider to myself to be pretty lucky w/all my bass choices and this one is certainly no exception. In this respect I don't read "GAS" as shameless consumption, but as; there are some real gems out there! It's like just when you thought it couldn't get any better, you experience an instrument to "taps" into another facet of your inspiration/creativity.

So is the mid adjustment fluid or are there notches? Just wonder how you determined amount of mid-boost. Did you have it plugged in while you turned it so you could hear the difference? I feel reluctant to mess w/mine as I'm lovin' the way it sounds right out of the box but may want to experiment at a later date.

I also like the both pu's full (w/one or the other slightly off to favor neck or bridge) w/my other J's I own, but so far I like full bridge w/o neck. I think it's because the bass-response in general on these is so massive, coupled with it's ability to provide a flavorful tonal range w/a nice high-end definition. Other J's w/that same setting just sound clanky and harsh, and a bit anemic.

I was (again) lucky to acquire the B-15N ('75) a few years ago for a nice price (about what my Jazz Bass Plus cost!) and it is all that's said about them and more!

What other 2 basses did you acquire mjac? I could do it if I had to, but it would be hard to narrow down to only a few. There were a lot of years that I only had one bass and was happy (well 2, one electric and one upright). Related to my earlier statement about owning a number of instruments, I was thinking more specifically that having different basses is like having a crayola box and each crayon is a different colour. Each one allows an expression that is related but each one is unique/individual. Crayola box's come in a variety of sizes with additional colours - whether you have one crayon or a box full (and you play and enjoy them) - it's seems to me that it's all good! :bassist:
