Fender Plus Deluxe Club

I just realized that these downsized Fender basses came in size specific moulded hs cases, and that's why you can usually buy one w/its original hs case - mostly because a standard J wouldn't fit. :rollno: So my further question is; was there a specific case for the Jazz and one for the Precision (P/J)? - or possibly different interior moulding from one to the other?

I realized the one that came w/mine fits a standard J, which I can definitely use - so I'm considering buying a Plus/Deluxe case (like the one your bass came in mjac) specifically for my Jazz Bass Plus. (for a tight, safe transport fit) Can you tell from looking at yours that a P Plus Deluxe would also fit? Seems they would have only made one case for both, but you never know as I have G&G style cases that only fit a (standard) P-bass. (J's have those c-r-a-z-y hips!) :p

Sorry, no, I meant does both the Jazz Bass Plus and the Precision Plus Deluxe fit in the same case (like yours) Seems like they would.

Anyone else have both to know?

- I agree, the hardware is top notch. HM bridge by Schaller (great bridges - I just installed one of their bridges on my '93 American Standard "boner" J) and the (Schaller again) tuning pegs are top notch. (would you consider selling yours Ronnie?)

Yeah I also think the original hardware was very good and good lokking too, but a bit on the heavy side.
This bass is my favourite of the basses I have had, so I dont want to part with it, it is a keeper!

Ronnie you are the man!! you should upload that to Fender's website plenty of folks out there would love this info there's a place in the manual section that asks people to upload old manuals or I could do it with your permission this has to be the only copy of that manual on the net Ronnie I think you just made history sir congratulations :) and the price of these basses are creeping up I'm going to keep my eye on the natural bass JIO mentioned and this one to see if they both sell.

If you are at all interested... I do not know the weight of these (probably between what you have on now and the originals) but they are inexpensive and very well made (MIK) I have a set on one of my basses - they're nice. From the front they look like a slightly smaller version of the Deluxe Schaller sculpted "F" tuning pegs that come on these basses.

Yes, thanks for posting the orig manual. I just got the Tony Bacon & Barry Moorhouse book "The Bass Book" ('95/revised '08) and on page 122 there is a pic of a brown-burst '90 Jazz Bass Plus V. I have the '95 book also, and so the addition of this pic is new. The updated book is very nice and has much series information for Fender basses as well as pics of instruments and players. Worth checking out.

Well about the history bit I don't know, but happy to help:).

And feel free to share it on the Fender forum, in my view it isn't up to me to decide (and even if it was it would still be okay).

I'd leave the original tuners. I could swear their weight added to the overall sound of the bass. You see guys these days clamping fat fingers on the headstocks for the sound I'm talking about here. Plus, do you really want to drill holes in the back of the headstock of such a Deluxe instrument?

I have already replaced mine with the Hipshot Ultra Lites, so I have drilled holes in the back of my Deluxe instrument:hiding:

I thought carefully about before I did it, and i am very happy with the result.
The holes I've drilled will be hidden if the original tuners are put back on.
The reason why I did it was because the neck dive was so severe that it limited my left hands movement when playing faster lines, and this has become much easier for me after the switch.

Regarding the tone of the instrument, IME it depends very much on the specific instrument.
My bass also had some annoying "dead spots" with the stock tuners, which have gone to some place where I cant hear them anymore.
I believe you have a point regarding the tuners mass influencing the sound of the bass, but my experience is that it can go both ways.

Well as long as they're hidden, and if you plan on keeping the bass forever..the holes shouldn't matter.

I always thought the extra headstock weight eliminates dead spots on the neck, but every neck is different..just like you kinda said.

I miss my Jazz Plus Deluxe every day. Hope you hang onto yours.

The black strings I have on the bass are D'addario nylon tapewounds (.045-.105), in short I think they sound like a mix of flats and roundwounds.
For the most part I play DR Hi-Beams (.045-.105), and compared to them the tapewounds feel a little stiffer, most notable for my fretting hand, but if you play with a lighter touch in the fretting hand, I don't think it is gonna be a problem. And I don't notice it when doing bends.

It's hard to describe sound exactly, but I think they sound good, and worth a try if you are curious.
And if you dont like them you can strip them of the nylon and get a pair of regular roundwounds;)
