Fender pre-CBS Club: pics mandatory!

Just posted these in the Jazz Bass Club before I saw this thread.

'64 Jazz Bass Dakota Red.

All original solder joints, pickups have never been unscrewed, original frets, finish etc. Original bridge is in the case with the covers. The threaded saddles were cutting into the strings, breaking them way too often. So I installed a non-invasive Bad
Ass bridge.

I see the Road Worn Basses and just shake my head.

This bass has been my number one through a good 900 shows.

During heavy use days, I used Mother's Pure Carnauba Wax to protect the finish and chrome.

When the luthier pulled the neck as part of documentation there was barely any fade between the exposed finish and the color in the neck socket.

BTW the luthier recommends Bore Doctor woodwind conditioner for preserving the Rosewood.
For those who don't know the rosewood fingerboards are Brazillian up to somewhere in the 80's

To clean the back of the maple neck he uses mineral spirits
and wet sanding with 3000 grit wet or dry paper.

Neck was fast before, now its faster!

Also No More Round Wounds on this bass!

The tops of the frets were flat where they should have a gentle crown. He dressed the neck and I'm putting D' Addario
Black Nylon Wraps on it again to preserve the frets.

The pre-conditioning indoor flash photo is better at showing the yellowing of the pick guard and the checking in the finish.

I'm actually a bit surprised to see so few pre-CBS basses in these very busy forums.

There are definitely some drool worthy basses shown here!

The pin-up girl bass is outstanding!

The Marine Band bass player who sold me mine in '73 was GASing for a Les Paul Studio Bass.

Fine by me! :D

I paid $250.00 for it.

What year is it? Is that the original finish? Cool bass.

I was in We Buy Guitars yesterday, they have two P basses one is white I think the other is burgundy mist neither is on their online inventory FYI if anyone is serious about looking.

The custom color jazz basses they had sold. They still have the pictures up on their site

Great photos--too bad everything is sold already but glad they kept the pics up.

My 64 Precision. Definitely wish this could talk and tell me its story. When I got the bass it was hard to tell how it had gotten into the condition it was in. No idea how playing a bass could gouge the body the way this one is gouged. The aluminum shielding behind the pickguard disintegrated into dust when I took the pickguard off. I changed the tuning keys, which seemed worn, but still have the old ones. Never had the plates for over the pickup and bridge or the case. Knobs were in terrible shape and were changed and I probably changed the pots, too... been 30 years and I can't remember. Neck was funky so I took out the frets. Pickup is original.

Main reason I bought this was I liked the way it looked and I had never owned a Fender bass. IMO Fenders look great all beat up, other basses not so much. I still can't play fretless very well so it doesn't get much use.

Cool bass--the gouge is from aggressive picking? You should consider having it re-fretted so you'll play it again.

So I've been playing my 59 a bunch but one thing that keeps me scratching my head is the neck. It is slimmer and faster than the 63 which is a little more beefier. Both great necks in their own right but I would have thought the opposite based in the 59 I played before (huge neck). Anyone else have a 59 with a slimmer neck that tapers towards the nut?
