Ten years of Jazz bass evolution caused the bridge pickup to move almost 1/2 inch closer to the bridge, resulting in a change in tone.
The second picture of the headstocks was as close as the guitar guard cat, Samwise Gamgee, would let me get

All other things being equal (same strings, same settings) the 73 is considerably brighter sounding than the 63. Possibly the one-piece maple neck/fretboard contributes to this, but I think it is mostly due to the wider spacing between the pups. I actually prefer a warmer tone most of the time and usually play the 63 (or I go all the way to the bottom with my P-bass )

I picked up a 64' AVRI jazz last week and I am really enjoying it. It is built with the craftsmanship that I have seen in 60's fenders with regards to contours, neck carve and finish. You should try the combo of roundwounds on the E & A with flats on the D & G on your 63. I am digging it a lot right now

Wow, my favorite two color schemes for Jazz basses, white with a rosewood fretboard and TS PG (or is it red maybe? I like it anyway ^^), and black with a maple fretboard and a white PG Love this

Here's mine, bought from Denmark Street back home in London in around 89. She's a re-finish done way before I owned her, in terms of shape her neck is absolutely beautiful. Strap locks obviously, I replaced E tuning peg with Hipshot D-tuner in the early 90's, took off the volume and tone control knobs because I never liked them and I like the bass without. They're probably somewhere in a box in my mothers loft. Ive never removed the pickguard but I did remove the neck once and it had a Dec 63 date on it which was interesting because it was sold to me as a re-finished 1964. I was never interested in what was original or not in terms of pick-ups, pots, machine heads, strap pins etc, it just spoke to me in the store and it's been my go to ever since and its never ever let me down. I will never sell her so losing value means nothing to me, this has been my main tool for 28 years and that has much more value.

She's also been with me on every live date I've ever done. It can be heard on a few records, "Tossing Pennies" by Billy Mann, "The Hearts A Lonely Hunter" by Desperado, "See You At Sunrise" by Desperado, the whole "Shut Up" album by Kelly Osbourne, "Paid My Dues" by Anastasia and I think I used it on some Lionel Richie tunes also but I can't remember.

Anyway, she's my girl and she's put up with all my turns and hopefully she continues to.

Hello All,

I would love to join the club. I have a 63 P-Bass. Refin in Lake Placid Blue, which based on a small bit of paint in the control cavity I believe is the original color. Pots and jack have been replaced, but the pickup, hardware and pickguard are original. The bass sounds just as it should.

Hey guys, I read through this whole thread yesterday and really enjoyed obsessing over the pictures. I'll post photos in here tomorrow when it allows me.

I had a question regarding the delineation between pre and post CBS. I'm not trying to start a big debate on this but I'm just curios as to why some people consider 1965 guitars to be pre-CBS when the company was sold in early January. I was told by a vintage guitar dealer that the cut off date was September of 1965, but the rational for this month was not explained to me. There are several Strats on ebay that are listed as Pre-CBS but are from 1965. If the company was sold on Jan 5th, than how can anything in 1965 be Pre CBS?

A steal at that price! Just the refin and refret is a fair chunk of change... been there, done that.

I'm looking for help. Inherited a Fender Precision and the AMP that goes with it. Serial number on the backplate says L27291. Everything I see says Pre-CBS 1964. Should I have someone look at the neck date or can I go by what the plate says. Inherited it from my father who was the original owner. As far as I know nothing has been modified. Still in excellent shape and in the original case. Found the circuit information on the amp in the bass case and it says AA864. Any information would be appreciated and if I am in the wrong group I'm sorry.
