Well, I've posted pics of my '61. That's the only all original pre-CBS bass I own.. But here's a pic of the '61 next to my '66 that still has all pre-CBS features (except for pearl dots)..

There's some love on that wood.

My own observation has been.. They were all pretty dark and black in the pre-CBS years. They started to get more maroon by the end of the '60s, and very maroon by the mid-'70s. Then they went back to black in the late '70s/'80s.
He's mistaken. They were definitely all plastic after '57
Not doubting you at all, I was just told different.
I'm really enjoying the discussion.
Nope my 62 is plastic. I believe they're polyethylene not ABS. Anyone know?
Yeah I had mine off and was surprised how thin and pliable it was and it seemed to be polyethylene. ABS is quite hard in comparison.I don't know how to tell the difference.
TI's on there Brian? Sounds great.
This is like... like... a vision... just BEAUTIFUL!!! There is no other more perfect combination on planet Earth! Thanks zacmac... I continue to dreammmmmI got my B15N back today from the shop and cleaned it up. figured I'd take some pics while I had it out in the kitchen cleaning.

Love the sound clip Brian... My kind of music... And your '61 P is PERFECT!So my band just finished a 5 song EP and I ended up playing my '61 P on every track because it just sounded so good! And I got to thinking (I know, dangerous).. there's a lot of great pics of old Fenders on this thread, but why not post some sound clips too?! So here's one off the new EP, hope you enjoy it (you can also listen to the other 4 songs if you click on our band name above the song title)..

Here's mine, bought from Denmark Street back home in London in around 89. She's a re-finish done way before I owned her, her neck is absolutely beautiful. Replaced E tuning peg with Hipshot in the early 90's, took off the volume and tone control knobs because I never liked them and I like the bass without. Probably somewhere back in a box in my mothers loft. Ive never removed the pickguard but I did remove the neck once and it had a Dec 63 date on it. I was never interested in what was original or not, it just spoke to me in the store and it's been my go to ever since and its never ever let me down.
It can be heard on a few records, "Tossing Pennies" by Billy Mann, "The Hearts A Lonely Hunter" by Desperado, "See You At Sunrise" by Desperado, the whole "Shut Up" album by Kelly Osbourne, I think I used it on some Anastacia and Lionel Richie tunes also but I can't remember. She's also been with me on every live date I've ever done.
Anyway, she's my girl and she's put up with all my turns and hopefully she continues to.
