Not in the pre-CBS era, it changed in 1968 with the CBS "TV logo".

Also, I've never noticed any real consistency from year to year, with the placement of the headstock decal or string trees on pre-CBS Fenders. They were pretty random snce they were installed by different people.

I think '68 was the year they also changed to plastic moulded thumb rests where the originals are made of maple, painted black.

They replaced the wooden (single screw) tugbars in 1957 with the plasctic 2 screw style that is still in production.

Well, I've posted pics of my '61. That's the only all original pre-CBS bass I own.. But here's a pic of the '61 next to my '66 that still has all pre-CBS features (except for pearl dots)..

Yup. What I'd like to know is when they made the brown/maroon ones and when they stopped.

When I bought my jazz used in '73 the previous owner said he lost the original wooden one and all they had as replacements were the plastic ones.

My own observation has been.. They were all pretty dark and black in the pre-CBS years. They started to get more maroon by the end of the '60s, and very maroon by the mid-'70s. Then they went back to black in the late '70s/'80s.

He's mistaken. They were definitely all plastic after '57

Nope my 62 is plastic. I believe they're polyethylene not ABS. Anyone know?
