Fender pre-CBS Club: pics mandatory!

Thank you for the congrats. Played acoustic guitar when I was young (40+) years ago but enjoyed listening to my father play more than playing myself. I have been holding on to it for the past 14 years to see if my children showed any interest. Thought it would be worth holding on to for them. None have so far. So if the neck plate gives me that information should I even bother having it dismantlement to have the date checked on the neck. Trying to figure out what avenue to go down. Get extra insurance to cover the "what if" or give it up so that someone can enjoy it like I know my father did.
First, congrats on inheriting a great bass from your father.
You can date it a few different ways, & really all of them play into it equally in regards to an accurate overall date.
The plate as you've already done, showing at least that the serial plate is of the year 64
Then there is the "Neck Stamp"
Which is an easy find but does require some basic mechanical skills, & care to avoid damage.
Pretty simple to do, but if you're not 100% confident, you can always take it to a shop.
Then there are the potentiometer codes (the knobs electronic body under the plate on the underside) they are each stamped with a code that tells you the year, & week they were made.
It wouldn't be uncommon to have different years on these three sections, IE;
64 serial plate
63 neck
63 potentiometers
You can then (if desired) also date the pick ups as well.
With well taken photos pretty much anyone here can date it all for you as long as you're capable of disassembling it, & posting a few picks.
Most of the guys here can tell you if all of the parts are original, & if they too are from the same year.

That is a sweet bass, well taken care of,looks like the original strap that came with it too...hold on to it it only gets better!!!
Thanks! Father really took care of his guitars. I know how important and rare they are as well so this one stays in the gun safe. Can't fit the amp in their though so it stays in the closet and gets cleaned off every once in a while.

Since I have been checking on value recently, also been considering getting a little insurance coverage on in as well. Any thoughts on that. I know it is a little secure in the safe, but they are only rated for so long. I am one of those people who likes to prepare for the worst and hope it never happens.
I never looked into insurance so wouldn't know how to go about it,I don't bring it out much but when I do it never leaves my sight...

No idea why but a pre cbs burst reminds me of a cheesburger, the black is charcoal meat, the red and yellow is ketchup and cheese mixing together. Thats what I think every time I see the burst of a old P, not a newer one as it is just not the same burst.
I always think of German Shepherd dog when I see my two tone sunburst color fender bass.. LOL
Got to play a 1964 P bass last week. The necks on those things are just unlike anything made these days. Really thin neck with teeny frets. Was great fun to play.
