Hey all,
I’ve just saw this and made me smile

!
I’m the actual owner of this bass right now! Nevertheless the fact this bass plays and sounds astonishing, this instrument seems to be original since they used to do few “custom orders” back in the days! (Check also Carl Radle’s bass).
Also, at the heel of the neck you can see that it has a stain of paint (what looks like a number 3) that matches with another stain on the neck pocket, and the finish does not look at all an “early refinish”! Proof for me that the neck was paired with the body from the beginning and not changed later on in its life.
I don’t have the actual “real” reason why this bass was done like this, but one thing is sure…no refinish or other weird “post production BS” except a recent professional refret job done by Huw Price in the UK! Truss road works great but it does not need any adjustments since the neck does not move at all (I’m also using always the same gauge for the strings)!
Here’s a pic of the decal with the checking beneath it…I know it’s not an 100% proof of the originality but to me it means that it got older together with the bass. For sure when I have the bass in my hands, all fits with the “Fender standards” and quality of that time!
For who wants to hear it, I leave a YT link of a video shot in a studio earlier this year!
Cheers

P.S. my answer here is just to share my point of view!
