Fender Precision experts, is this a 1978 "P"

1K is very fair whether it's a '78 or '81. It might be on the heavy side which is really bad(Going by most TB'ers) or not a concern at all. (Going by my personal opinion)

Speaking of strained comprehension, I'm still having a little bit of difficulty wrapping my head around a grand for this, though. At what point did these become more than just old, used precisions?

I have the same "sunburst" P with a S90 serial number, though mine has a white pickguard. It has the thumbrest, too. My only gripe is its weight: 10.5 lbs. Other than that, it's a keeper. I think I paid $1100 and that was 3 or 4 years ago.

Well, where this will hold it's value or go up somewhat being a 70's Fender, a new Fender P will go down in value and probably never be worth what you paid for it new. With 60's Fenders being out of price range for most, the 70's are coming up in value compared to a few years ago. Plus, I see folks paying alot of money for basses that have been aged at the factory. I'd rather have the real thing, just me I guess.

We're still trying to work out a time to get together.
