Fender Precision Look-a-Likes

NOT

Hey Folks,

I have always loved the look of a Fender P with a sunburst finish. However, I hate the tone I get out of a Fender Precision. What type of bass brands have the looks of a Fender P?

IMO, although every p bass is somewhat different sounding, a p bass, whether it's built by fender, another builder or you build it yourself using after market parts (from warmoth, allparts etc) will still sound pretty much like one p bass or another, unless you install active pickups and/or a preamp, or change the actual location or type of pickup. roundwound or flatwound strings can also make a big difference as to the resulting tone that you get.

perhaps an indicator of what exactly you don't like about a P tone is in order.

You could get a Sting Sig (Fender) which is available in sunburst, is a P, but has a single coil pup.

then there is the G&L l-1000 & 2000 and El Toro ( along with the SB-2) which share a common p-esque body shape but different pups / combinations

then there's the Carvin bolt-neck bass (not the SB4000) that is a P with 2 jazz coils.

And a million other variants, but I agree, shop with your ears then your eyes. Or at least a combination of both at the same time.
