Fender Precision standard cost?

Hi all. I just bought a 2012 Fender Precision P-Bass W/ Active EMG Pick-ups Black + OHSC Candy. I paid about $1195

Is that a lot for one of the previous iterations of Fender Precision basses? I have read they are better than the new Player line. Not sure how the active EMG will sound. Hoping it gives me that P bass tone but I guess it will be active instead of passive now.

EMG pickup costs about $100. Installation is near free to $50 depending on your skill or need for a tech to install it. A new USA Fender is about $1200. A new Player (MIM) is about $700.

I can't tell you if they are better. Whether it was too much or not would depend on which model it was, but I would suspect it is too much.

It's a Fender Standard Precision made in the United States. It was the line before the Player line was introduced and the American Professional line. It's basically a professional fender but someone took out the passive and put in an EMG active with no EQ.

Yeah, you bought a used standard P bass, that no longer sounds like a P bass, for the price of a new one. You way overpayed.

I think that's a little harsh, it's probably more like you overpayed a bit, but well within an acceptable range if you really dig it.

Do you know what the pickups are exactly? Did that price include shipping?

It did. They are EMG active P pickups.

I still have time to back out of it before it ships.

After reading the thread, I believe the price you paid, while towards the high end of the spectrum, is not unreasonable or unrealistic.

Whether the price is worth it to you is another story, one that only you can tell.

Confused what exact Fender model bass this one up for sale is too. Some say Standard others say it's American Professional but the year is 2012 on the serial number.

The picture shown for the Reverb ad shows a EMG pickup with exposed pole pieces. I don’t think any of their actives have exposed poles due to their design. Not certain on which model that is. I think some HZ and all the Geezers do , because they are traditionally designed passive pickups.

Until actually owning a bass with active EMGs I expected to hate them and replace post haste. After spending some time with them they have now become one of my favorite pickups, particularly in p/j configuration. I have a fretted and Fretless with an original model set and a 3rd with alnico X set with BTC pre and love the tone of all of them.

To the op-that’s a beautiful, classic p there. Maybe a little on the high side but not outrageous. If you decide to get it, enjoy.

Like @TN WOODMAN , I'd want to confirm if they are in fact active. Just saying active EMG P pickup isn't very descriptive - they make a lot of Invalid Link Removed. (Edit to remove incorrect note about HZs being active).

If it's a 2012, it's definitely a standard. The Professionals didn't come out until 2016 or something like that.

Thinking about it more, if it included shipping it isn't so bad. And it's a good year, and should be a great bass.

Try it out and see if you like the tone. 2012 is when those American Standards switched pickups to the CS 62 that you can pick up aftermarket and get the bass back to square one if you so desire.

The bass doesn't come with the original pickup by any chance still, does it?

My goof, I thought the HZs were active. If not, then based on looks, it sure seems like the OP's bass has passive pickups in it.

Who knows, maybe he'll get lucky and they'll turn out to be Geezers!

The listing also mentions that the bridge was swapped with the original included, but the one in the listing pictures is the appropriate original bridge.

Good thing the bass itself looks better than the write-up - trust your eyes here, not the write-up.

PS: See that valley right in the middle of the chart around January 2019? That $850 point was my 2014 American Standard. BUT that cost does not include shipping from Canada.

Lol. That chart indicates the OP paid more than anyone else has. I've done that, though, with no regrets. The price is worth it if the bass is worth it.

It's a tough call, as I'm not sure how "free shipping" is factored in. Shipping can be fairly expensive.

If that was the P bass I wanted, I'd have been willing to pay what the OP did.

Gold-lettered EMG's with pole pieces. I think the gold lettering indicates alnico magnets, so that might be a PVA2 pickup.

I hated EMG's for a long time. I eventually realize they were just different from what I was used to, and now I really like them in certain situations.

It looks like the newer ones, even alnico models are all silver, at least form what I can tell. I wonder if that might have been true for a certain period of time though.
