Fender Rumble Club

@Aaron Houts

I apologize if this is a stupid question, as I am fairly new to playing bass, but why do you need to get a new head if you already have a 350W head and two 1x15 cabs?

Can't you just use the one cab (@ 220W) for low volume and two cabs (@ 350W) for louder volumes? Since the new head is not bigger (500W or 800W), I am trying to understand the need of an additional head.

You could apply the money saved toward the new bass you want.... ;)

You are exactly right.
The actual main reason for the second head would be to have a complete rig at a second location. I could have a head and a cab at my house and one at the drummer's house where I practice. Then, I could just bring my bass to practice and not have to lug any amp stuff.

The other reason is that some people believe that an amp sounds good if you push it a little bit. This is a big thing with guitar amps and some say it's similar with bass amps. If I had a lower wattage head, I could set the volume knob a little higher to push the head. Right now, I barely crack the volume on the 350 head and people run in fear. Just like you I'm learning so I'm interested to see.

Plus, on TalkBass we say that you should always have a backup of everything so we can all buy as much gear as possible...I mean in case anything breaks down during a gig.

As for the other bass, that's a long way away for me.

Okay, so it looks like I may be in a band.
A drummer friend and I have added a guitar player that we really like and we have three singers lined up to audition.

The point is that we may be having regular practices at the drummer’s house.

I have two 115 cabs and really only ever need one at a time, so I’m thinking of leaving one cab and my Mud Stand at the drummer’s house and one cab at home.

It’ll be much easier to just have to move a head and a bass without the cabs.

TALKBASS: “Well gee, Aaron, if you got another head, you wouldn’t even need to carry the head. Plus, you ALWAYS need a backup head because that’s more likely to fail than your bass or your cabs. (which of course you should also get backups of.)”

ME: “Well, I WAS thinking of picking up that Rumble 200 head to tame down the rig for more mellow gigs...”

Does that sound about right?

Updates to follow...
Remember how I bought a second 100 combo for the “rare” occasion we play a “big” gig with the drum kit? And I’d just leave one at home, one at the rehearsal room?

Well, I feel like my band is conspiring against me; we just played 2 drum set gigs this month and booked 2 for next month!

So now I feel like I’m going kinda crazy, and looking at the bigger combos again! I know I don’t need it; but it does come down to convenience, all that extra hauling combos around seems like a pain.

(And of course a small part of me is looking for a reason to get that big amp...) :bag:

It might be time for a 200c...that you can always get a 115 extension cab for later...
200 watts into two 15s: that’ll show ‘em!

FWIW, in the videos I posted, I've got the 200c set G-8, vintage and bright-in, B-10, LM, HM, and T-noon, V-noon. The LPB25(Barts)-5.5. Neck pup only. Oh. OD off-used as mute.

Interesting.
There are different controls on the v2 head.
There’s no Gain knob and the EQ is different.
This is what @Youngspanion is working with switching back and forth between the v2 350h and the v3 500h.
Very cool!

Honestly, I think a 200c would be perfect for my current projects. Even though the 2x100 packs more watts and speaker surface, the convenience is tempting (I figure every gig with the 100s, I’m hauling 3x more than I would with a single combo, with the extra amp going to and from the rehearsal room)

But, if I ever do need that extra cab, I’d be kicking myself for not getting the 500. In the tone test, I slightly favored the 500, but the 200 sounds great too!

Decisions, decisions...

Or you could get a third 100C... or, ....

Personally I like a lightweight but versatile head that I can use with various cabinets... enter the Rumble 800HD, and all GAS has vanished.

Yup, bass volume at 5 1/2(active Barts). No PA line, just the amp. I haven't been "in the PA" since.......uhh, ...... 2017(?).
Nice, it sounds killer. I vaguely remember you mentioning you don’t use PA. And that’s the kind of venue, instrumentation and style I’d be using it for, 200c is gaining speed!

If I had to do it all over again, I might go head /cab . But I still use both the 100s all the time, and I’m in too deep now! (Combo life, that is) :roflmao:

I think you know what to do then, sir.

This is a guy that's thinking outside the box!
Well played, sir, well played.

That's not my "regular" band; open mic/jam-never know who all will be there. The PA owner has enough inputs that he could put us in it but there's really no need to.
Under the "grass is greener" umbrella, if I'd known the 'daisy chain' thing I mighta gone with 2 100s; 1 for most gigs, both for some. The only time I use the horn in the 200c is if I run the CD player through it on breaks, so I wouldn't miss it. And my first amp(cab)had 2x12s-always loved that sound. But-no complaints about the 200c.

Don’t get me wrong, the 2x100 is killer and I’m still glad I got the second. It’s really a matter of convenience at this point. Hauling the rumble home from rehearsal , then both to gig and home, then one back to the rehearsal space is a chore. The idea of one combo for bigger gigs, haul it to gig and home, seems real nice.

I asked the band point blank if they wanted to take out the drum kit more often, they told me no. Then we start playing all these gigs with the kit. That’s what I get for listening to the guitar player and the drummer ! :roflmao:
