Fender Rumble Club

I’ve got some more tone technicals for you all.
There is sometimes a flat=good, scooped=bad oversimplification that’s around on talkbass. Just because too much scoop can sound good solo but get lost in a mix.

Shows the normal “scoop” with the eq at 12:00. I was a little surprised as I was under the impression the Rumble was pretty flat.

I used to have a Fender Bronco 40 with “amp modeling.” The Rumble setting sounded pretty flat, while the GK and Ampeg settings were scooped and the SWR Redhead more treble biased. There were also bass heavy amp settings. (I sold it as it was small and too many distractions; I just wanted a straight amp with eq that sounded like itself). The Ampeg setting was especially dramatic sounding, with a thick bass response, I think due to scoop and compression.

Nice dramatic bassy setting, really fun. But I can see where it could get lost in a busy mix except for the low bass indistinct hum. At any rate, the scoop on the Rumble is apparently relatively mild.


Yeah, Doug, the XLR Out and Headphones both take a hefty -11dB scoop between 500-600Hz and people rave about the great tones from them.. And the Contour button makes a whopping -17dB scoop at 700Hz! So, the "all 12s" setting's scoop of just -4dB at 600Hz isn't really so much by comparison. ;)

Sorry you didn't like your Bronco 40 modeling amp. I had its predecessor, the B-DEC 30 bass/effects/cab/drums modeler, and loved it so much I couldn't wait to get the new Rumble Studio 40 modeler (though I miss the drums). I love the versatility and flexibility of them, even if I don’t always use it much in gigs & jams.

Hey this isn't strictly Rumble-related, but since I do this with my Rumble, it's not UNrelated...

I've been practicing using headphones, but the headphone cable always gets in the way. I tried using aptX Low Latency bluetooth headphones, paired with a LL transmitter, and those almost worked, but the small delay was still just a bit too long for my liking.

But yesterday I tried my old RF wireless headphones (Sennheiser RS 120 II - Audio Headphones Stereo Wireless - Ideal for modern music & TV - Lightweight). They work great! So now I can practice with wireless headphones with no delay. Those headphones had been unused for about 10 yrs so it was great to resurrect them.

I see a lot of these coming up for sale on craigslist, etc. because people are probably switching to BT (like I did), so they can be had cheaply, second-hand. Because they're RF, they introduce some additional electrical noise, but I've shielded both of my basses with copper tape so the noise is quiet enough that I don't notice it.
 
Hey gang, quick question for you (as I'm unlikely to read all 2400+ pages to find the answer!); if I'm running the line out XLR on my R40, does the internal speaker still pump out noise? I'd test it here, but it's living at a rehearsal space, and we are going to do a live recording/concert there in a couple weeks. I want to know if I could run a line to the board to get a good, isolated bass capture while still letting some amp noise into the room so everyone can hear it. On some of these smaller/practice amps, the line outs can defeat the internal speaker, which is what I'm hoping to avoid.

Worst case, I'll bring a DI or something with me to sort it out. But would love to just use the amp on its own if possible

Sure, there are several videos on Youtube that show you how. Here's one:

I shielded a Squier P bass like they did in that video, but for my 2nd bass, a Yamaha, the pickups are separate cavities from the pots, so at first I didn't shield the pickup cavities and that only partially reduced the noise, so I shielded the pickup cavities too and that did the trick. If your bass is like that, remember that you have to electrically connect the shielding of the pickup cavities to the shielding or ground wire in the pots cavity. I did that by running thin wires from the pickup cavities to the pots cavity.

In at least one of the videos I watched, they soldered the wire onto the shielding, but I just used more copper tape to stick the wire at both ends to the shielding tape. Be sure to get copper shielding tape with conductive adhesive! It'd be much tougher with non-conductive adhesive.

As a side note, I see the price of the V3 410 went from $500 to $600 at GC within the last week or so...

Another Edit, sorry for not getting back, I've been running and doing too much at once. Yeah this is stuff I know (or at least should know) This is basic theory.

A head will/or may put out twice the wattage with half the impedance. But each cab (having the same impedance) will only see half the total wattage.

In this case I know I'm getting caught up with the fever of new gear. I've had no experience hooking up anything that gave me a chance to make the wrong decision, anything this big, powerful, expensive, the rules still apply. My head's not super clear so I appreciate you guys tolerating my stupidity at the moment Haha. Seriously tho Thank You.

Does anyone know exactly what Fender does to make a 410 cab the same impedance as a 210 cab ? Is the individual speaker impedance in the 210 different than that in the 410 ? Because ATM that's the only way to come up with the same impedance for each cab...

Now I might go shake the house a bit.... :)

No probs, slop! The XLR Out doesn't turn off the 8nternal speaker. The Headphone jack is the only connection that does that. Also, the Rumble manual has the same answer in nowhere near 2400+ pages.

G-Dog is correct. The XLR Line Out does NOT defeat the internal speaker. I use it that way at Church; Rumble 40 as my personal monitor, XLR Line Out to the Church’s FOH board. Works well.

Correct! The shielding must be grounded or it will be useless.
All the pieces of tape must be electrically connected too, that's why they have conductive adhesive on the back. Check continuity with a multimeter. At that point it's just a matter of running a wire from any point in the shielding to a grounding point, for example the back of the volume pot.
This will get rid of the buzz that goes away when we touch the strings. The bass will be completely silent. Single coil hum however will still be there :)

Thanks G-Dogg, it sounds good. Now I have several options to set up. Some redundancy with the 500 combo but really IDC, it seems rare I ever get the hots for much, so I just went ahead and did it. I was pretty happy to go used with the head and 410...I figure if I ever decide to sell its less of a loss but that's BS I keep my stuff for a long time. In reality I spent a bit more than half of new for something I don't "need", but the want/need line got pretty blurry this time ha ha.

Everyone is home so I won't be shaking all that much for a day or two, and I have a ton of practicing to do over the next 4 days. It hurts man

Yes, the speaker still works as it should. I do this regularly. I use my 40 for my church gig, but only as a stage monitor and the XLR out goes to the board and the sound man blends me in to the mix.

I did, for a few minutes. It was nice. Maybe it's a subconscious decision to move forward. I've only been doing bands 3 years. I've only played one live show where this (or part of it anyway) would have been needed.

I practice with the 100 combo, which is a very solid unit.

Is it time to unload my GK MB115 ? I have 4 bass amps total, space is an issue. Won't hurt to keep it around Either, but with the 100 combo, 500 combo, 800 head and 2 cabs I'll only want to use one of the rumbles anyway..I should probably let it go....

As some of you know, I got a bit goofy within the last two or three months. Started with a used Rumble 100 combo, then a new 500 combo and 210 cab. Yesterday a used 800 head and 410 cab. Overkill I know. I'm OK with that part.

I've had my GK MB115 up on Craigslist and FB market place. It's the model that has no output to add another cab.

I believe it's up for 300, seeing the new ones are $700. Not a single hit. No offers. I'll most likely drop down another $100 today. It's only worth what someone is willing to pay, and I don't see myself using this anymore.

Seeing I only paid 150 used for the 100 combo, maybe I'm way overpriced on the GK. The GK is twice the wattage but as far as I can tell I'd take the 100 Rumble over that any day..

Looks like I might have to drop considerably on the GK. I didn't think it would be that tough to sell...
