Fender Rumble Club

A. I do not understand why a single 8 ohm 500W Rumble 410 couldn't handle the 400W from your Rumble 800 HD. Maybe the Gain, Overdrive, Bass, and/or Low Mids, or all four, were cranked too high?

2. If a single 500W Rumble 410 couldn't handle the 400W of your Rumble 800 HD settings, then I cannot imagine that a 300W Rumble 115 could even do as well. I'd expect it to blow! A Rumble 800 HD with a single Rumble 115 cab iwould only be safe for low volume settings. ;)

iii. I believe you would need three Rumble 115 cabs, reducing the power to just 267W each, to be able to safely handle louder Rumble 800 HD settings!

But, that's just my opinion. And I am a somewhat cautious fellow. :smug:
.
Perhaps a 'glance' at the Rumble Club Wiki would help.

I took a risk and purchased a used Fender Rumble 500 Combo from GC. Everything works and the amp sounds great but the fan is noisy. Is this to be expected or should I expect it should be quiet?

Aha, jurry! @jurberg, you are now member #1482 in the Fender Rumble Club. Congratulations and welcome. Put that number in your TalkBass Signature for safe keeping. Then make yourself at home here and on your Rumble Club Wiki page, the repository of all Rumbling wisdom and knowledge.

That is very unexpected, jurry. Most Rumblers aren't aware that they even have fans, much less noisy ones. I can’t tell from your sound file if it's loud enough to be heard when you play. If so, take it back. If not, decide if the price makes it livable,

Thanks for the club membership!

The fan noise is not loud enough to be heard when I play. But it is the perfect frequency to be annoying when I'm not playing. I think I'll head to the Guitar Center and see how a new Rumble fan sounds. If it's quiet, I'll return this one and just pony up the couple hundred extra for a new one. Between the quiet fan and the warranty, it will be worth it.

I've been playing bass for over 15 years on worship teams at churches I've been at. I had an Acoustic B450MKII. It was loud and sounded good, but was very heavy. I sold it last week and switched to the Rumble 500 to save the weight.

Wow... 2500 pages in this thread... must be a decent amp?

I have a Rumble75, bought dirt cheap because "worked one day not the next" and hoped it was a simple issue like a solder joint. They said they never looked inside or anything and I got it for 1/5th what most are selling for used around here. Definitely signs they were inside the amp part. In any case, bad voice coil, was half unwound inside and broken wire.

Been almost a month searching locally for a used 12" bass speaker with no luck. Canada so, shipping from the USA plus exchange, duty, etc, is not an option.

May try to wind a new coil because it's an oddball size no one makes. Speaker already dead so why not. That said though... The Rumble75 a worthwhile amp to salvage? Not in a band, not played a bass in 25yrs, will basically be an oversized practice amp. If you had one with a blown speaker... what would you do?

The fan on my 200 combo was the same. If I wasn't playing, I could hear it, and found it annoying. My solution? I moved the amp to the other side of the room, away from my DAW, and bought a longer instrument cable. :bassist:

Hello everyone,

I've been reading up on talkbass on a different of things lately to get my gear sorted, so i thought i'd join up. I'm messaging from the Netherlands.

I have recently swapped my Rumble 800stage for a full stack Rumble 800hd (with the two cabs). Loving it: love the tone, especially love the weight. Now waiting for my pedalboard and stompboxes (coming in Monday, jeej!), and i'll be good to go!

Would love to be a club member!

Ive had my 500C with the 115 cab a few years now and most of the time I don't even realize it's ON..no fan noise of any sort..so I would suggest as G-Dog and others have, that if you are hearing loud enough fan noise to bother you..return the amp as it should not do that as demonstrated by your sound clip.

I can't remember what agedhorse suggestion to you was last month about a 12" speaker recommendation...did he suggest anything to your satisfaction and if so did you follow it up? I have one of those Rumble 75 tiltback amps and I recall the 12" speaker is a Fender Special Design driver. Maybe it would be worthwhile contacting an authorized Fender agent or Fender themselves?

Aye, me hearty, Rumbles be much more than decent amps! @THRobinson, you are now member #1483 in the Fender Rumble Club. Congratulations and welcome. Put that number in your TalkBass Signature for safe keeping. Then make yourself at home here and on your Rumble Club Wiki page, the repository of all Rumbling wisdom and knowledge.

I'm with the guy in your previous thread who said go ahead and put the cheapest thing you can find in it and get to playing. Yeah, it won't be the best/optimal/awesomest sound but, for a $60 amp + low$ speaker, it'll get you going. That's all you need from this experiment as a beginning bassist.

Please tell us a bit more about yourself, TH, such as your bass experience in general and your Rumble journey in particular. Whatever your situation, you're going to fit right in here since we have all kinds. But we all love to ... ... ...

Got some info... butted heads a few times as well... I mostly went with advice on an old thread where a few people dropped an Eminence S2012 into the cab with the sides/top lined with 1/2" dampening foam. Apparently they were extremely happy with how much better it sounded. But, I'd be looking at $180CAD for a speaker for an amp I got for $60CAD. Hence the hesitation. That's why I'm debating if worth adding the speaker, or spend the same amount on a different model/brand. A used Bassman the same size seems to cost twice as much as a Rumble... does it sound that much better just because of the speaker? or other aspects?

That said... the old speaker has been a bit of fun to mess about with. Been researching and watching DIY vids, and the aluminum from a soda can seems to be about right for a voice coil. 32AWG wire is about $15CAD for a big roll. Some various glues and paper, and should be able to recreate the coil.

But if something smaller (ie. Orange Crush 25w) sounds better, I'd rather have it. The price tag and extra features on this over a Rumble 15/25, temporarily blinded me as to the physical size of it.

Oh, as for Fender... 100% useless. No specs on the speaker, none for sale for replacement either. Basically said too bad.

Well thanks very much for that welcoming message and glad to be a member of this club.

Ive been playing for 15 to 20 years now. Took basslessons the first year, and did the rest myself. Ive played in coverbands, written own songs, and im playing in a Jamiroquai tribute band now. I also play piano, guitar, sing, do songwriting (if i have the time). I used to work as a professional soundengineer. Now im a certified music therapist and lecturer in music therapy.

I gigged with trace elliot, and later hughes &ketner. Now i wanted something less heavy, and stumbled upon the rumble series. I got the stage 800 used (at a good price) because there were no 500's (neither combo nor head) available.

So i switchen from a stage 800 (used) to a 800hd (also used) because the small screen on the 800 stage blacks out after a certain amount of time. It doesnt affect audio or operation (i can use the app), but it became a trust issue for me. Its out of the warranty periode so Fender doesnt chip in for a solution (tried via official fender dealer). I feel more confident with my 800hd. Also when it should break down, i imagine it could more easily be fixt than a vague, hard to diagnose micro-electrical or software issue in the 800 stage.

Currently waiting for my effects/ stompboxes. Should be able to make my pedalboard next week.

Bam! Should cover the 'introduction' bit. If you have questions, feestje free to ask. Ill be following this club with interest and pitching in were i can.

Yeah TH..doesnt leave you too many options on a cheap amp..the speaker replacement will bump the price up quite a bit as the driver is the actual end result of the amp..the sound you hear.
Park the amp aside if you have no luck with your plan and keep your eyes open for a cheaper 12" speaker on the interwebs someplace...im sure you will run across one somewhere that should suit the amp..a lot of info flies past on the net and when you least expect it sometimes out of the blue, right into your lap the very thing you needs drops from the sky..lol keep a look out..a 12" suitable speaker may appear out of nowhere for a good price yet.
Perfect example for me was this...I had 2 Rickenbacker basses over the years and sold them both for various financial reasons at the time..I always wanted another one and in 2017 I was in contact with a guitar tech from the Aussie music shop The Bass Centre..we were talking about amps and he happened to mention they were expecting an overseas shipment of basses the following week.
Jokingly I said I dont suppose you have any Rics coming in...knowing how John Hall from RIC only ships a few at a time worldwide yearly..my guitar tech said..matter of fact we have 2 coming in..a Fireglo and an Autumnglo which is already spoken for..I sent a deposit within the hour for the Ric 4003 Fireglo..so out of the blue I ended up with something I had wished for again for ages, and this was totally unplanned. You never know what tomorrow may bring. Best of luck with the amp.

@Giffro ya, my upside here is after 25yrs of not playing a bass, I'm not exactly in a hurry. My bass right now is in 20 pieces anyways. I have a Squier Affinity, nothing special... sanded it down, refinished it dark metallic green, Fleor alnico pickups, dark tortoise shell pickguard, and the chrome bridge/pickup cover and tug bar. Saw a vintage re-issue I liked so copied it. Messed up my decal so making a new one then clear coat and done. Put it together and do a fret level, dress, and setup.

If my re-coil fails... I'm only out another $20. At which time I flip a coin... sell it as-is and get the Orange 25w, or fix it up. I'm not in a rush but I bought it in the Fall last year, finally sorted out the issue with it about 6 weeks ago. 2 more months a decision needs made else it's just wasting space. :D

Yeah, Robby, sometimes some advice on TalkBass can be more confusing than helpful. One "Upgrading a Fender Rumble 75 Combo" thread you mentioned was started by one of our illustrious Rumblers here, but he did that just for grins after many years of use from it, and he had other Rumbles to rely on. :)

If just for learning/practice, I'd say 'No', it's not worth a high dollar speaker. A cheap-o/used speaker just to make sound is all it's worth, IMHO.

Whoa, dude! The Bassman is Fender's premium line of bass amps with all the bells & whistles that the Rumbles (value line) lack. Of course they cost a lot more, 'cause they're features are worth it. My Rumble 500 combo and Bassman 500 head w/115 cab are perfectly matched for power, but the Bassman does some things the Rumble never can; but the Rumble is lighter and, therefore, travels much more. :smug:

There ya go, Robby! That sounds like a worthwhile experiment, as long as it's not holding up your bass learning progress. It'd be interesting to hear how that comes out. Keep us updated, huh?

A Rumble 15 or 25, or even a used 40, is probably gonna be your least expensive learning/practice bass amp. See the articles on your Rumble Club Wiki page, at the bottom of the Rumble V3 Reviews section. The Rumbles figure very well in all such articles lately.

... ... ... Oh, as for Fender... 100% useless. No specs on the speaker, none for sale for replacement either. Basically said too bad.

Yeah, that model has been discontinued for 8 years now, so probably no parts available even to Fender Authorized Service Centers any more! Such is the fate of such value line consumer electronics these days.

However, for newer models, Fender has been true to their warranty in case after case here; usually replacing the entire combo, even for small problems. Replacement is cheaper for the company than repair for these inexpensive models. But a few Rumblers here have even found some shops willing & able to make some Rumble repairs out of warranty for a reasonable price!

You sound like a very busy luthier type muso..best of luck with the bass for a start..sounds like a good project and we hope it comes out well for you. I'm sure you'll make the right decision on the amp as well..you sound like you are in 1 excellent working piece, compared to your 20 piece bass guitar loll..best of luck.
