In praise of (old fashioned) 100 watts and the Rumble 115

Jammed with a house provided Ampeg BA115HP (15") combo recently. Ampeg specs boast 220 watts, yadayadayad. Drummer and two guitarists and my passive P-bass. Not enough power, and I did not venture to dime it for fear of damaging the danged thing. I couldn't hear it well half the time. And nothing special on the tone, either. Maybe it was the size of the room, etc? Sorry, Mr. Ampeg.

Next jam brought my old 100 watt Yamaha head (circa 1980s) paired with my Rumble 115. Set it up in the exact place where the Ampeg was stationed. Difference was night and day. Reaffirmed the Rumble 115. I know my Yamaha head always slays but I haven't had the opportunity to open it up on the Rumble 115 in awhile. Standing on the left side of the drummer with my rig twelve feet away on the other side of him I could feel the presence and hear note for note out of that cabinet. Hooray again for a wedding of the old and new.

For anyone who is undecided out there, the Fender Rumble 115 is really a fab cab! Can't be beat for the tone, portability and price.

I just gigged a Rumble V3 115 cab and a Rumble v3 500 head. Easy as pie. And LOUD!!

BTW... Upright bass with piezo pup and Guts. I was seriously impressed.

I did a gig with my upright and just a piezo under the bridge foot using only a Rumble 200. It did a great job in a pretty large room with about 200 people.

OutSTANDING! Rumbles with upright bass! :woot:

Gentlemen, please, we need pix of that. I’m not saying it didn't happen, mind you. But photos helps us visualize the versatility of our favorite amps. :D

Well, unfortunately no one took a picture that night. But, I did set out a cheap handheld recorder. It was just a pickup gig with two guys I'd never played with before. Anyway, I just made a short video that just shows the peghead of my 100 year old German Flatback bass and the music is where the guitarist took a solo. I was using my Rumble 200. This is not my usual type of music, but it was a lot of fun.

Just ordered a Rumble 800 HD. I've been looking for something I can gig with a speaker on some gigs and without a speaker on others. Most of the newer micro-heads can do this, but the price/sound/misc won me over. Plus I have a Rumble 100 for practice with a small combo and the sounds are the same, within reason.

What speaker(s) are you planning to hook up with the
Rumble 800 when it’s time to rock the house? Can you dazzle us with a photo of your Rumble(s)?

I play a Fender Jazz with flats through a Fender Rumble 500 head and a Rumble 210 cab for our gigs. I have a Rumble 1x15 but since we play Blues and Blues Rock (think Clapton, SRV, Hendrix along with BB, Freddie, and Albert King), the Rumble 210 seems to cut through the mix a little better than the 1x15.

Our keyboard player, who started out in high school as a bass player, in not a Fender fan at all, especially guitars and basses. Almost every gig he will complement the sound I get through my Rumble, which is a true complement from a Fender hater who owns an Ampeg BA210 combo.

BTW, Except for a tuner, I have no pedals or external effects. Overdrive, Contour, and Bright always off, Vintage on or off will depend on the room.

I only use a Barber Tone Press compressor (modestly) when I play and I never turn it off. I did notice at an outdoor gig once that my bass needed a little something more. I remembered GonePlaid mentioning the Vintage button a while back, so I kicked it in and it really made a difference. Normally I don't use the buttons, but like you and others have said, it really will help in some situations.

Some real envy going on now. You get to cover some Tommy Shannon basslines. The joy! :bassist:

I'm planning to run it in some situations with no speakers, direct into the sound board and monitor with in ears (the "silent stage" model). No cabinets to lug around, which is nice.

In other cases I'm planning to try it initially with my GR Bass 1x12. I also just had my local guitar shop order me a Rumble 2x10, so we'll see how that sounds too.

The head should be here tomorrow, I'll post some pics.

I am rejoining the rumble club! I had a rumble 25 as a practice amp. Went wayward and sold it and bought a ampeg 110 v2. Did not sound as good as the 25. Traded the ampeg at GC for a Rumble 100. Still using it as a practice amp but sometimes we gig at this really really small joint and the 100 willl be perfect

It doesn't hafta be a small joint. As long as your drummer isn't a Keith Moon wannabe, the 100 will cover a surprisingly large area.

Thanks for the good words! I have been playing bass for about 25 years, some of the time playing in churches. Now just small gigs playing oldies. Basses? Been thru a lot . I still have not found anything i like. I bought and sold fender p & jazz twice along with others. Sold them all. I am down to my Sterling ray4 I bought to play at a rough joint we had gigs at. I have played it at every gig for 3 years. I guess it is my keeper! My rumble 100? Picked it up today at GC! Traded my Ampeg 110 v2 in. Rumble sounds much better. Even the rumble 25 sounded better than the ampeg!
