Fender Rumble Club

Anyone install a speaker mute switch on a Rumble combo?
Like how plugging in headphones works. Would love to be able to use the DI sometimes but not the speaker.
Usually the switch on the headphone jack is just closing a circuit when the 1/8” is plugged in.
I believe the standard answer is to plug a plain 1/8" TSD jack into the headphones port. You could also just plug phones in.

OR ... another sometimes useful answer, if you don't use the built-in Overdrive, is to turn the Drive and Level both fully counterclockwise and use the Overdrive button as a footswitchable mute/unmute switch! ;)

Of course, as always, auditioning their tones in a store is certainly worthwhile in case they really sound like what you want. 🤗

Correct.
Theory says that I could just take whatever wires that control the output of the speaker on the 1/8” jack and connect them to a SPDT or DPDT on/on switch.
This should let you mute the speaker without plugging anything in or use headphones jack and amp at the same time.
Having the headphone and amp on at the same time seams useless but the stereo headphone jack could also be used as another output if put into something like an AV DI box.

Just curious to see if anyone has modded their rumble to do that.
For the time being I will just plug in a 1/8” plug that isn’t connected to anything.

I imagine modding an r40 like that would overall cost more than the difference between an r40 and an r100, which also got the EFX send as an alternate output (and without speaker sim).

Yeh, probably right. It looks like everything is on a printed circuit card, if the jack was on a separate card I could easily install the switch myself. I don’t touch printed circuit cards.

Hello my friends, question for you about slaving Rumbles together via the FX Loop Send-Return method. I appreciate this is an older topic..

So I originally had the Rumble 100 and loved it - especially being able to lift it over my head with one hand.

However the band needed more power at gigs, so I upgraded to the Rumble 200. Now this is OK for tone and volume, however I suffer from some physical disability and moving it around is difficult. I can hardly lift it, and it gets bumped and dropped and scraped a lot along the way from my car to the venue and on stage, and back out again afterwards. Eventually I am going to damage the amp, my car, or myself. It's got to go.

But to be honest, I need just a little bit more volume than the Rumble 200.

So I am thinking, rather than upgrading again to the Rumble 500 which will be even harder to move, or finding a 112 or 210 or 115 extension cab, I should downgrade to 2x Rumble 100s.

If I am reading the circuit diagrams and this forum and everything right, this should actually be a bit louder. The Rumble 200 only puts out 140W at the moment because I haven't plugged in a cab to the extension jack.
Whereas, two Rumble 100 amps, one slaved to the other, would theoretically put out up to 200W (whether that is peak or RMS is not particularly germaine- let's just say it would at the very least match the 140W I am currently hearing from the Rumble 200..).

And aside from talking about watts, the increase in total speaker area would also provide volume boost: 2x12=24 inches rather than 1x15.

AND THE KEY POINT OF THE EXERCISE:
I can lift everything safely again, albeit probably making two easy trips to the car instead of one awkward, heavy, dangerous one.


Is this a good plan, folks? They will certainly be easier to carry, but will this setup be louder? Much louder, or just incrementally? Does this work for you?
When I am slaving them, how do the controls work? Do the Slave volume/gain knobs do anything? Or does it literally just need to be plugged in powered on and the master unit provides everything?

Appreciate some comments to let me know I won't be wasting a chunk of money on this experiment. Cheers.

You're absolutely right in all your thinking, except in your speaker area calculations; 1x15"=176.63si and 2x12"=226.08si. So, just 30% more, not 60%. BUT, what you didn't figure on is the vaunted identical stacked speaker coupling effect giving enhanced tone and richer harmonics! So, yes, your situation should be much better off with two R100s than a single R200.

So, how about telling us a bit about yourself, Handrew, such as your bass experience in general and your Rumble journey in particular? You'll fit right in here since we have all kinds. But we all love to ... ... ...

I've swapped the driver in one of my 8 ohm r100s to a basslite one lately.
It has significantly more volume (at the same settings) and is significantly brighter in the upper mids (sounds like somewhere in the 2k-4k range to my ears).

I could do a loop and/or a range sweep and ABY the 2 units, but would need time which I don't really got much lately.

Yes, the 8ohm r100 has a driver that is generally voiced bass/low-mid heavy.

I'd say with a little EQ-ing, they could be set close enough.
Thanks for the your report. It is interesting how people have such different tastes. That 2-4 kHz rise that I had initially with the Rumble 100 4 ohm speaker was :crying: :drool: for me. I much prefer heavier bass/low-mids. I use a pick for the most part. I generate into the 2-4 kHz with pick technique/pick choice even with a heavier bass/low-mid voicing. IME, Tortex and celluloid easily get those extra harmonics. Gel picks are generally more mellow, almost finger style with a touch more attack and harmonics, depending on how much edge you use.

When my 4 ohm unit had that increased 2-4 kHz range I could not get it tamed with EQ while maintaining any semblance of my preferred tone(s). The Rumble's EQ's high-mid center at 1.2 kHz and the treble at 10 kHz wasn't working to decrease the 2-4 kHz range for me. Fortunately, speaker break-in did tame the area. I was pleasantly surprised about the development. I did not think that speaker break-in would have that significant effect on voicing. I haven't had an amp morph so significantly. I have decades of guitar amps but only have had three bass amps.

Interesting, but not my cup of tea, going from the YT demo. I think the Orange Crush series are a better complement to the Rumble series. Ampeg has its thing, and rightfully so.

TBH, have bandmates or friends do, or at least aid, the lifting for you. It isn't the amp. It is your lifting and past history of injury that are most concerning. You may still injure yourself with a smaller amp and less than perfect lifting technique. For most lifting situations, team lifts are much safer than a single person lift.

I would advise you to get a collapsible cart. It saves heavy lifting and carrying, and makes your life a whole lot easier. It may also allow you to keep the 200.

With bass you need 10 times the power to be twice as loud, so the obvious way to increase the loudness is by adding speaker area rather than watts. There is no one answer to this, it all depends on how loud you need to be. 2 12" drivers add up to about 28% more speaker area than a single 15". That will contribute more to overall volume than the 60 watt power increase. If that’s not enough then adding a 15" extension cab to your 200 would be the way to go, since you then get the full 200 watts and double the speaker area. But in that case a cart will probably be more or less a necessity.

There is also a thing with our little brains getting used to sounds. That's why we find certain sound profiles familiar, and that's why people chase "classic" tones that they are used to.
This also applies to eg. speakers or headphones. The one You use for a time becomes the "standard" and deviations from that can feel odd.
So if I had to guess not the speaker breaks in, but rather our brains (ears) :)

... ... ...adding a 15" extension cab to your 200 would be the way to go, since you then get the full 200 watts and double the speaker area. But in that case a cart will probably be more or less a necessity.

Jake, my main man, you hit the head on the nail again!

Handrew, since you already have the 1x15" R200 just add a 1x15" Rumble cab and a cart. The cab probably comes with casters and can carry the R200 on smooth surfaces. Otherwise, a cart with large wheels is advisable for rougher terrain. PLUS, the identical stacked 15" drivers will make the most of the 200 watts with the tone enhanced speaker coupling effect!! 👍🎶

Quite the opposite.
Their 3-band has a midrange selector _and_ they got an extra tone control on top "tilt". No voicing (preset EQs) tough.

What I am curious of is their wet-dry blend swith on the OD circuit, I always loved the blend knob on my BDI preamp.

I have previously posted measurements that show that auditory acclimation is not the case for my situation with my 4 ohm Rumble 100. There is a marked decrease from initial measurement in the 2-4 kHz range after 8 hours of use under the same testing conditions.

Did You use the same loop for testing?
I am playing the instrument/amp whenever I play. So I am plucking differently on different setups. Basically learining the amp itself and playing accordingly.
For example on a "honky" amp I tend to pluck with less attack and closer to the neck. It's kind of unconscious, could say: playing with my ears.

It is not a loop. That is one weakness. My technique is solid. Any potential variability would not explain the large change in that frequency range.

To counter, how can you assume that it is auditory acclimation? To attribute it to auditory acclimation, you would need to make theoretical assumptions that would yield far larger potential discrepancies than any variability in my technique. For example, do you know to what degree auditory acclimation affects perception? What are the buffering effects of auditory memory? Within the range of listening profiles/abilities, can that degree be generalized to all subjects equally? Can that degree of acclimation be applied to formally trained musicians?
