Fender Rumble Club

You were plugging headphones into the AUX jack? I would think a switch in the jack turns the mix of the aux in on/off, so if you're leaving the cable plugged in, it might affect the sound.

As far as headphones plugged into the headphone jack, that should mute the speaker out.

Fender manual says:
P. AUX IN: Connect external audio device here. Amp controls do not affect this input. Adjust volume/tone of aux signal at its source.

Q. HEADPHONES: Connect headphones here (32Ω minimum impedance). Speaker output is automatically muted.

No, their ipad goes into AUX. Headphones are in the headphone jack.

About the only thing that could be
I’ve noticed something puzzling about my Rumble 40. I’ve had it for maybe 10 years or so, but never noticed it before, which isn’t to say that it’hasn’t been there.

I use the 40 mainly as a practice amp at home. Since I live in an apartment, I usually use headphones, and an iPad as AUX source.

The other day, I unplugged my iPad for a moment to use it for something else, leaving the other end of the cable in the amp, and noticed that as soon as I did, the signal from my bass became noticeably louder. When plugged my iPad back in, the signal became much weaker. It tried this with several AUX cables, and several headphones. No change. Without headphones plugged in, the effect became somewhat less pronounced , but was still noticeable.

My other Rumbles, a 500 and a 15 do not display this trait. Can anybody throw any light on what might be causing this?
Are all those Rumbles V3? 40 and 500 have the same block diagrams, and although the specific implementation of the Aux In mixer could be different, I doubt it.

Can you try something? With the cable connected, short the tip to sleeve, ring to sleeve and tip+ring to sleeve. If there's something funky with the Aux In mixer, then this will affect the output signal.

If it doesn't, use a 1.5 V battery and connect it across the jack terminals (positive battery terminal to tip+ring and negative to sleeve, then the other way around).

I've been curious about the ext speaker connection on the Rumble 800 (not Stage), seems like I've seen posts here about connecting TWO additional cabinets to it, but I never could make sense of the impedances and power outputs mentioned. So I found out that yes, you can do that, but as soon as you switch it to 4 ohms, it disables the internal speaker, which makes perfect sense to me. So it's rated at 800watts into 4 ohms, which you can only get if you either connect one external 8 ohm cab (with the switch set to 8ohms) or two external 8ohm cabs (with the switch set to 4 ohms), and the internal speakers are then disabled.

Forgive me if this has been made abundantly clear already, but I just needed to get it straight in my own mind, which it is now.

Interestingly, to test this, I used my trusty old Kustom K200 3x12 cab (which is 5.67 ohms), and found that it sounds remarkably like the Rumble's internal speaker. The Kustom is a much larger enclosure, with two ports on the front. AFAIK, back in the 60s, they didn't do nearly as much work tuning and matching speakers and bass cabs like they do now (and that 3x12 cab was marketed for guitar, not bass), so I was surprised at how much it sounded like the Rumble - so I guess Bud Ross knew what he was doing after all!

FWIW, it's loaded with the Kustom-Eminence Integrated (aka "Turbo") speakers that they used for the late 90's Chinese-made Kustom reissue line, which were intended to mimic the Jensen C12Ns in the original cabs. I don't know how close they are to that, but they sure sound a lot like the speakers in the Rumble.

It really really sounded like the Rumble speaker was just off, but tilting it up toward me just now, yeah, it's still working.

So forget everything I said . I'm still confused about the output power and impedance of the Rumble 800.

I agree that the labeling of the 800's Impedance switch can be confusing.

My understanding is: on 8 ohms, 400W goes to the internal speaker, and if present 400W to the 8 ohm cab. On 4 ohm setting, 300W goes to internal speaker, and 500W to the cab or cabs combining to 4 ohms. Do not use 4 ohm setting without a 4 ohm load on the external connector(s).

I agree that the labeling of the 800's Impedance switch can be confusing.

That's because it is written in reference only to the extension speaker(s), and the numbers are rounded off to boot! See below.​

My understanding is: on 8 ohms, 400W goes to the internal speaker, and if present 400W to the 8 ohm cab. On 4 ohm setting, 300W goes to internal speaker, and 500W to the cab or cabs combining to 4 ohms. Do not use 4 ohm setting without a 4 ohm load on the external connector(s).

- (USE 8ohm IF NO EXT. SPKR) - The internal speaker load is 8ohms. You may attach another 8ohm speaker load here while leaving the switch at the 8ohm setting. The amp automatically switches to 4ohm operation, just like the Rumble 200 & 500 do without this external switch.​
- 400W 8ohm MIN - If you attach a 8ohm speaker load it should be rated to handle at least 400W.​
- DISCLAIMER: While it's ideal that the extension cab be labeled for 400W, or greater, 7ender itself is very conservative with its ratings and labels! The 2x10" speakers in the Rumble Stage 800, which can see 400W, are exactly the same as those in the Rumble 210 cab officially rated and labeled at 350W! And though I've advised Rumble 800 (Stage & otherwise) users against using the officially rated and labeled 300W Rumble 115 cab, I have seen no one anywhere admit this combination had any problems! YMMV​
- 500W 4ohm MIN - If you attach a 4ohm speaker load, either a single 4ohm or two 8ohms, it should be rated to handle at least 500W.​
- DISCLAIMER: Actually, a 4ohm external load can draw up to 533W, leaving just 267W for the internal speakers! But this was written to "simplify" this setting. So, don't get so hung up on such details. 🫣
- SET SWITCH TO MATCH EXT. SPKR IMPEDANCE - This means to disregard the internal speaker load in this setting!! Yes, adding an 8ohm extension to the internal 8ohm load makes a 4ohm total load, but DO NOT USE THAT FOR THIS SWITCH SETTING. 7ender has worded this for "ease of use", or beginners, or something, making it confusing for anyone with a little knowledge of impedance!​
So, there is no "disabling the internal speakers" in any scenario! It will allow too many speakers creating too little impedance and frying the amp! You need to read and heed, and understand the label and/or manual in this regard.​

You can strategically use the 4ohm setting on the Ext. Spkr. connector without a 4ohm load connected! The lower impedance setting actually reduces the voltage inside the amp in order to maintain the 800W power. Therefore, the 4ohm setting with only an 8ohm cab connected can facilitate use of a lower rated cab! For example, another major amp maker freely admits his 800W @ 4ohm model outputs just 600W at 4ohms with a lower (2ohm) impedance setting. That 2ohm setting being similar to the 4ohm setting, actually for 2.67ohm operation counting the internal load, on the Rumble 800 combos. (This is NOT TO BE CONFUSED with the 8ohm 300W Rumble 115 apparently being safe at the 8ohm setting, as referenced above, due simply to its very conservative rating.)

However, I regret to say that I have not found any specific number amount(s) for this situation with the Rumble 800 amps (Stage, HD, and combo), though I've asked here several times.

is the same as that on the Rumble Stage & 800 combos,
but it has no internal load to consider in, and leave out from,
it's labeling. (It also goes down to 2.0ohm, not just 2.67ohm)​

Silly question for poor folks like me. Can I manually copy a present tone in a Rumble Studio to an ordinary Rumble? Sorry if this is a stupid question. It's just that there are tones in the Studio that when I try it at GC it that blows me away. I have an R500 and I don't want to buy another amp. Thank you!

Edit: I meant Rumble Stage settings to Rumble Studio.

I'm pretty sure the modeling feature you're talking about is peculiar to the R40 Studio (or, presumably, the R800 Stage) All the other models are just straight amps, with no digital capability to load, use or manipulate models.
I didn't know if the screen on top might give a clue as to the settings for each preset, which could then be copied to a non-digital control panel to get close to the desired tone(s). Or not.
