Fender Rumble Club

Well, Rumble-fans, I received my new Rumble 40 today. Nice present to get back from work to!

No surprises here, I'm very glad to say - it is a excellent bit of kit right out of the box.

Having used my old Orange 20-watter for practice for the last 7-odd years (and before that a Marshall for...ahem...many more years) this amp is a revelation.

I was hoping to recreate my rig sound (Rumble 500 and 115 cab) at a lower level - and it does just that. The bass is powerful, and the tone is juicy. I went for the 40 as I wanted the Vintage Tone Selector as I always use it - sounds great with a P, and with my '74 Ric (my dream bass), is just oozes the kind of tone I always dreamed I could hopefully produce from it - a classic '70s bass sound. Proof that Fender amps also work exceptionally well with 'other' basses as well.

I've got the big rig for our R'n'B trio - but I'm hoping to do something a bit quieter at some point in the very near future, bit more low-key - and the plan is to hopefully give the 40 some gig time too. It's certainly got some poke.

So there we have it - another Rumble success story. Think I'm fully Rumble'd up now. One for every occasion.

.....and in the words of Linnin, who's expert advice and opinions really make this place.......Rumble on!:bassist:

I've been playing through a Rumble 500v3 for the better part of a year, and have been nothing but happy with it's combination of terrific sound and portability. I was in a music store recently and by chance picked up a Rumble 100v3 combo. I couldn't believe how light it was. I figured that 100v3's sound would equally light. Poor assumption. The tone belied it's lack of heft. Great sound through the 1x12. Long story short, I now own a second Rumble. The 100 combo is the answer to a question I had yet to ask. I love to engage in serendipity.

You gotta lift a Rumble 40 some time. Be careful, though. You could put it through the ceiling. It's that light. Seriously, I'm glad your Rumbles are working out for you. I think you'll be surprised at how much you may use that 100 in places where you would think you'd need the big amp.

Rumble 410 arrived today, so Club #485 checking in with a pic and short report! :D

Basic testing indicates that both R500 w/410 and R40 will perform as expected and sound great to me (both set up similar to the 200 combo). Quite pleased, and sure both will get exercised regularly. Going to like the portability of the 40 and the power of the 500. GAS has somewhat subsided (saw Ric5's post in GAS/GAL!), but there will always be that voice saying "you need another R410 cab to get the most out of that head...".

Perhaps I didn't do "Aux In" with the 200(?), but sure enough, "Aux In" does not go through the "Master" - its volume is controlled at the source and the signal goes straight to the power amp. Scott was right - I think "circle plus" is a positive additive that combines signals before sending to power amp (lower left). Interesting....

Enjoyed the comments ;)

Cheers,

so i haven't been keeping up with this thread, i almost never venture into the amp forum, i mainly stay in the basses section, but i'm thinking about ordering a Rumble 410 cab. i just recently sold my fender bassman pro neo 115 because i needed the money. it sounded great and i hated to give it up but i haven't been using it much and when i do use it it's only in a bedroom situation. i have a Carvin 410 that runs at 4ohms but i need an 8ohm cab to go with my fender Studio Bass head (all tube, sounds amazing!), and i'm drawn to the rumble 410, i really like that they have eminence speakers. i may order it tomorrow but i'm going to sleep on it. i have a recording coming up soon that i'd like to have a new cab for. i also don't know if i want to buy used or new. do new ones come with casters or do i have to buy them separate? guitar center has a used rumble 410 for $300 plus $50 shipping, but i could order a new one for $400 with free shipping, so at a $50 difference i might as well go with new, right?

Hi Kyle, yes the Rumble 410 is a superb choice. Yes, it comes with casters, and yes buy new.
I bought a Fender Studio Bass brand new in 1979 and played it exclusively until 2005 when a severe life quake forced a sale of just about everything I owned. It was hands down the best tube bass amp I had ever heard. The stock EVM-II 15"woofer was also fabulous. It was one of the first cast frame drivers that also had an 88 ounce AlNiCo magnet that was absolutely killer.

Add me to the Fender Studio Bass lovers. I also bought one new in '80, with the EVM 15". I agree, the absolute best tube bass amp ever. Like an idiot, I sold it and got a Mesa D180 with a 2-15 cab....and while that was a killer rig, just didn't have the warmth that the Studio Bass did.

All my friends thought I was nuts. I had to order one, and had never heard one before. I think they were very close to a thousand dollars full retail. If ever there was a positively magic bass amp, the Fender Studio Bass amp was it. Always worked and never let me down.

I use my Rumble 100 mostly for home practice, both with headphones and without. I'm a bit surprised about the difference in volume when I use my headphones to practice quiet. I have to have the master volume at about twelve o'clock with my headphones to match the volume of the speaker at nine o'clock. Is it supposed to be like that?

My experience is very similar, @JakobT. It varies according to the impedance of your headset. On my Rumble 75, quiet practice is 9 o'clock. With headphones, I have to bump it up to 10 o'clock.

i found one used a few years ago and got it super cheap, it was under $400 after taxes! i ended up popping the amp out and i got a case for it so it's just a head now, and an hour ago i ordered a rumble 410 for it, so i'll be part of this club real soon!

New friend for my Rumble! Fantastic sound and set up nearly perfect out of the box. Was worried after hearing horror stories about the quality of Mexican Fenders but this 2015 bass is really amazing.

Anyone know a place to get cheap pickguards that definitely fit?

Hey Linnin, I was checking back when you picked up this thread as if you started it.
That's some serious dedication you've put into the Rumbles, kudos to you for doing it.
Maybe not everyone agrees with your (and others) opinion, but so be it, that's life.

Being a tweaker, I read your tweak about replacing the speaker of the 75 and putting in Sonic Barrier acoustic foam.
As I cannot find the latter product over here in Europe, do you think something like this will work too: Invalid Link Removed

Thank you for your kind words, Eric. It was a bit of a tumultuous time behind the scenes. Some people were very unhappy with me (to say the least). Founder Bumble Bee was having some serious issues at home and could not devote the amount of time necessary to running the Fender Rumble Club, and she was happy to have my help. She would show up sporadically here and there but eventually never came back, so I just kept the club going as best I could.

Yes that looks to be good acoustic foam, but I would go with the thinner 25mm (1 inch) as that is more than enough inside a cabinet. All you need is something that is going absorb rebounding (ricocheting) sound waves and also break up and absorb standing sound waves. Don't use too much and turn your cabinet into a dead box. You still want some liveliness in your sound. At first it is very subtle what the lining actually does, but once you crank some high volumes you will hear just how well it solidifies the entire bottom end and clarifies the broad spectrum of the entire midrange. The amount of total bass definition attained is well worth the time and effort.

While I'm in a kind of nostalgic mode, for those of you that don't know or remember, TalkBass used to be the most anti-Fender location on the internet. Flame Wars; Personal Assassinations, Cheap Pot Shots, and Low Blows were commonplace. Fender Bashing was the unofficial sport of TalkBass. For some this is still true, and that's how they operate.

Fortunately many things have changed for the better, and we are proud to be part of that change.

OK, thanks for your feedback, I appreciate it and I'll give it a try.
