I built a couple of custom "Fender" jazz basses. One fretless the other fretted. I used top of the line parts. The necks and bodies were ordered from a company that is LICENSED by Fender to make Fender necks and bodies. The basses actually play and sound better than any "real" Fender. I also own an American Standard Jazz Bass. I love my custom "Fender" jazz basses; they're incredible and play and sound awesome. I had no problem displaying the maker of these basses on the headstock until I had the unpleasant fortune of meeting the owner of this company. He came across as a complete a-hole. I still love my basses though; so, I'm thinking of putting "Fender Jazz Bass" stickers in place of current ones. I'm on the fence on this one. Since the necks and bodies ARE licensed by Fender, would it still be "ok" to label them as "Fender?" I know it IS a matter of opinion. I'm just weighing in. I'm also aware that there are "brand Nazis" out there.
