Fender Sting P-bass

gotcha. I did not know that.. If it were me, on something like this. I would start calling around asking them if they could beat a price of 35% off to start and see where it leads.

I doubt anybody is going to stock this so it would be a special order regardless of where you call. You might luck out and somebody may have one. But, I would establish the baseline of what you would pay new (the I got this price from a dealer can you beat it?). This gives a dealership @ 20% profit for shuffling paper and never seeing the inventory. Not unreasonable considering.

So I ended up ordering it from Zzounds.com last Tuesday and it was in my hands Wednesday afternoon! This thing is awesome! The neck is a bit chunky but I've big hands so its pretty comfortable. Zero problems with the bridge and the action is right where I like it straight out of the box! I used it that night at a small gig I had, and man is it punchy. I love its tone but hate the buzz, so I think I'm going to go with Fralin's split coil pickup. It retains the tone of the vintage pickup but without the buzz and it drops right in with no routing necessary. Other than that, I need to get a hardshell case and a set of DR lowriders and I should be golden. Overall this is my new favorite bass, but that may be just because I've wanted one for many many years. Who knows!

Great basses.

I purchased my Sting new in 05 at the GC at Druid Hills. I got it with a Tweed Hardshell Case for $600.00 out the door. Best deal I ever got.

These Basses have a feel and tone that you just can not get from regulars P Bass. Yeah it has it's drawbacks but on the gig it just keeps performing.

Once ever couple years or so I take it to my Luthier and have the bridge adjusted. He has some tricks. I have had no issues with the bridge at all, both intonation and otherwise.

The pickups are prone to fall apart. The first thin I do is remove the pickup and place some super glue in some strategic places. Then I file down the upper edge at the E string. I have a tendency to make the E string hang under the pickup. I then wax pot the pickup, twist the wires, and reinstall it.

I have a 51 that I did my little tricks to as well.

I also routed the control cavity out, installed CTS pots, a Vitamin Q cap, and a Switchcraft jack.

Now for my Sting I had a buddy make me a slug for the wire route under the pickgaurd and refinish the whole bass for me.

My 51 is yellow with a white guard. Both basses have DR Nickel Low Riders on them. The red bass weighs 8 pounds, the yellow ways 8 pounds 6 ounces.

I've never taken the pickguard off of mine, but is that route by the neck factory or is that something someone did for you to access the truss rod adjusting bolt?

The route is factory. I purchased this bass new and it came with it. I have had a couple TB'ers tell me they have never seen that.

You really cannot remove the guard without having a wire route hole being exposed. I had to make a special plug for that route, fit, fill, sand, and all that Jazz.

The reason I wanted a no guard version is #1 I had a real 53 with no guard/I wanted one like it and #2 by removing the guard one can slap easier on this baby. :bassist:

Also I like me some Red!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

Contours are for pussies. :hiding:

Wow, very nice piece! I'm also kind of surprised that no one with that Anniversary model P hasn't jumped in here. I don't quite understand why it has the late 57 to current split pickup in it though.

So since my last post I hadn't really had a chance to sit down with my Sting and play it, and in typical fashion, for me at least, I get a stabbing pain in between my ring and pinky finger of my left hand. Awesome! I figured this was mostly due to a lack of proper stretching and using and not being used to the fatter neck. I ended up playing through it and used the bass at practice. Everyone in the band I'm sitting in with loved it. They couldn't get over the tone. I love this bass!
