Fender Troubles...big time

Hey there fellow talk-bassers, I am having quite the issue with my MIA 2008 fender jazz bass

I bought it brand spanking new on December 5, 2008, at my local guitar center for 499 when they were blowing out the Blizzard Pearls with outrageously good deals. When I played it the neck was strait, there were very minor issues such as poor innotation and the action was just a little high for my tastes, but nothing that I couldn’t do myself. So I brought it home, adjusted what I had to, and played around with it for a week or so with no issue before I had to head home for the holidays, it played and sounded FANTASTIC. It was left in my apartment with no roommates in Tallahassee in a climate controlled environment (I mention this incase anyone would mention perhaps a roommate played it or the humidity/air could have affected the bass while I was gone, the air inside was a consistent 70+ degrees with very little variation). The bass was left in its case, flat on the ground with my other Fender and my Ibbys. However, when I opened the case the neck banana’d up on me, and I mean bad, almost half an inch at the 12th fret and perfect at the 3rd. Despite any adjustment to the truss rod, within a matter of days, or even hours, it would warp back up on me, so I decided to bring it back to the guitar center at which I bought it. Now my good friend who is a manager over there worked on it for a few days and no matter what he tried, he got the same results and offered to take it back or replace it with a warwick passive 5 string ash bass they were blowing out (they could not locate a bass at the same price or a replacement for mine, so that option was gone). Well I called fender and they said they would replace the neck if that was the issue, and I thought hard on what to do and even did a poll on talkbass, but decided with your advice and my own opinion to go ahead and get it taken care of. Theres no fender authorized repair dealers anywhere around Tallahassee but luckily or rather unluckily for me, I have had several heart issues and was forced to withdraw from classes and go back home to south florida where there were a ton of repair shops, and took it in.

I took it to MAE down in Fort Lauderdale, and the repair guy tried to repair it without getting a new neck and needless to say, he had the same results. He finally ordered the new neck and within 4 weeks it was repaired, and when I played it there were some setup issues and when I asked the guy why didn’t he just set it up for me after putting on the new neck he told me “look you’re already getting away with murder” and wouldn’t adjust it or fix it. I already had several frustrations with his service and contacted fender. There was this horrible buzz across the fretboard and the E string was flat out dead, every note on the neck was either a buzz or a dead note. So I tried to set it up and noticed the nut was set a little high and the frets could use some filing and like I said, I contacted fender. The customer service was impeccable, the rep told me to bring it to another repair shop and they would flip the bill because it was a QC issue. Well I did that, and the repair shop worked on it and said they had it playing perfectly, so I drove down, took it out of its case, and the old issues were still present, so he asked me to give him another day with it. The repair guy calls me the next day and tells me theres nothing he can do with it, he filed down the nut, dressed and filed the frets, oiled the fretboard, etc, and still buzzing. When I went to pick it up he said he wanted to show me something, and took out a 09 american fender strat which had the same issues as my bass, and said he couldn’t fix it either and has had several customers come in with the same issues with their new fenders, strats, teles, jazzs, and pbasses. He then proceeded to tell me how fender repair techs told him that the nut and other neck issues are to be FIXED AND PAID FOR BY THE CUSTOMER and FENDER JUST PRODUCED THE BASS, IT WAS UP TO US TO MAKE IT PLAYABLE. However true to his word the fender rep flipped the bill for the bass repairs.

Not taking this lightly I called the rep and said, look this bass is pretty much unplayable, I used to do guitar tech, I can’t fix it, I took it to authorized dealers, they can’t fix it, I took it to other local shops and they deemed it almost unplayable/unfixable. He said no problem they would still fix it, and he would call me back after consulting people above him to rectify the issue. He calls me back the same day and said the tech I brought it to did not pick up and he would call me back later in the week. Well the week passes and that Monday I called him, left a message, and got no reply. Tuesday I call again, he answers, promises to fix the situation, and he would call me back or for me to call him back if I don’t hear from him in 2 days. So 2 days pass and I call him back that Friday, and got no answer, just an answering machine. Called him again that Monday, he picks up and tells me no ones calling him back from the repair tech and again wants to talk to his superiors, still nothing. I’m not giving out his name cause hes been super nice and supportive in the past and I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt. He never called back and I let a week or so pass, and still nothing.

I do plan on calling him this week, but if this trend continues, what do I do?! I have the warranty and have been trying to take full advantage of it, but im not receiving any help on Fenders side for my now unplayable bass. The buzzing is coming through on my amp, my action is not super low, and the E/D strings are dead whenever I slap them. I cannot work due to continuing health issues and cannot afford a new neck among doctor bills piling up now that my health has worsened dramatically in the last few weeks.

I wrote this thread as a kind of heads up for future Fender owners as well as current ones, Fender QC on 2 necks has been terrible, as well as a vent/need for your opinions or advice on how to fix this situation. The customer service, while excellent in the past has broken down and pretty much left me stuck with this POS and its beyond any time frame for guitar center to help me out.

That pretty freaking crappy man. Is there anyway you can get in contact with someone higher up in power, rather than dealing with someone on the lower end of the food chain? Maybe it would have been better to just have traded it for the warwick at gc..but coulda woulda shoulda..

That's a pretty horrible reflection on Fender. You are much more patient with them than I would have been.

I hope Fender does right by this, and more importantly, I hope your health gets better.

Every company occasionally has QC problems.

It's how, and how quickly these occasional glitches are dealt with which counts.

For example: look at how concerned and responsive G-K has been in resolving issues related to their MB2-500. A true class act! :)

--------

OP, I realise that talk is cheap, but please try not to let this situation stress you out and aggravate your health problem.

The folks at FMIC have worked very hard to undo the damage which the CBS era did to the Fender brand.

I sure they'll take care of your/THEIR bass problem.

Hey guys I appreciate the health concerns and well wishes! Hopefully I can get it all managed or I might have to give up playing for good! :bawl:

To Dr. Cheese: I own another Fender, a fretless MIA Deluxe Jazz with the suhr pickups from the late 90s, and its a great bass, set it up and put a new set of flatwounds on it almost 3 years ago, and its been perfect ever since!

Lurker: Haha thats very true, but I wouldn't wish this bass on my worst enemies!

5string5finger: Thats the plan, if no help this week, then i'm going to get the superior

MIJ-VI: Yeah I would expect this on a lower level fender, but its been 2 MIA necks with issues! :rollno:

Thanks again for all the support/input!

I dont think he should flip it onto someone for a huge profit and hurt someone else out there, but he could sell it and tell the buyer that it has some fret buzz and be honest and still get 500$ for it.

I feel for you man thats rotten and all your time , energy and gas running around. fender may lose buyers for life and think if some one is modest and buys a fender every 5 years for there life thats around 10 basses they could lose out on , not to mention the buyers friends who hear the horror stories and go with other brands.

Howdy.

You paid $499 for a MIA? I've never heard of a new MIA Fender going for such a price. I'm sorry it turned out not to be such a bargain for you.

I've been reading here on TB that these QC issues went away starting with the '08s. Guess not.

"FENDER JUST PRODUCED THE BASS, IT WAS UP TO US TO MAKE IT PLAYABLE."

That's absurd.

Here's a strategy that I learned from my nervey mother when dealing with bad customer service. Find out the name and contact info of the CEO......I mean the HEAD HONCHO. You can get this info at the public library, if you can't get it anywhere else. Tell him your story, even if you have to send him a letter via snail-mail. It has always worked for mom.

CEOs seem to care more than underlings, I guess because their heads are among the first to roll if the company gets a bad rep, and most of all, if they aren't making enough money.

I'm another 'Mike' with heart issues, and I wish you well. It's not much fun. Take care of yourself my friend.

Regards,
Mike Burk

This would be bad enough for an MIM Fender, or a CIJ, but an MIA?
CIJ? No way, they're the reliable ones.

OP, I feel bad for you. I bought a MIA strat back in 2000, it was fantastic. After about 9 months however the finish on the back of the neck had cracked all over, some cracks as long as 6 inches and right through to the wood. I brought it back to the dealer, it disappeared for a week and when it came back it had a new neck, replaced under warranty. Fine, except the new neck was just nowhere near as nice playing as the old one. It didn't set up well, it didn't feel anything like the old neck. I ended up selling the guitar, it was no longer the guitar I loved. You'd expect necks churned out on CNC to have some sort of consitency but that's just not the case.

Long story short, I won't be buying a MIA Fender any time in the forseeable future. Their customer service was fine, there wasn't a problem getting the issue dealt with, just the parts weren't up to much.

Howdy.

You paid $499 for a MIA? I've never heard of a new MIA Fender going for such a price.

Yep. I got one too. Several of us here got the same/similar deal. Guess I'd better check inside the case and see how mine is doing.

The ONLY problem I've had with ANY Fender bass over a nearly 40 year span of use was my '06 HW1 P-Bass. The pups died a slow death on it. A quick continuity check revealed one of the coils had somehow opened up internally. Replaced them with Duncan QPs and now all is well, sort of. I mean, I wish I had put in Nordys as The QPs are just a bit over the top for me.

i would have taken the warwick, but mostly because i already have a jazz. I'm not sure of your collection/wants/tastes.

but sorry that this good deal turned into a stinker. IMO fender should be helping you out a lot more.

It seems to me you might have a twisted neck, which would entitle you to yet another neck under the warranty. I'd push for that, and it should work out if the authorized repair shop verifies the problems with the current neck, especially the shop has a good relationship with Fender. If not, perhaps find one that does, because I think this factor can make a difference. It's worth pursuing, because if you get a satisfactory neck on there, you'll have an awesome bass.

I'd work through the channels you're using now, but possibly writing to higher-ups as well if you can find their addresses.

Best of luck, on this and the more important issues!

Take it back to GC, bring your receipt, and and say the follow words:

"I WANT MY MONEY BACK. NO, I DON'T WANT STORE CREDIT. I WANT MY MONEY BACK."

Repeat as often as necessary, even if you have to stand there for two hours. If the salesman won't help, ask very politely to ask to the supervisor. If the supervisor won't help, ask to speak to the store manager. If the store manager won't help, ask for the phone number of the district manager.

Be sure you're near the front of the store, where lots of other customers can hear you.

This should be GC's problem, not yours.

Ed

that's really BS. I was considering a used MIA jazz I saw, but now I am not so sure. I am not sure if GC, Fender, or the repair guy are most liable here, but one thing is sure, you are not. I would go to GC, since that was where you got it, and make them deal with Fender. Considering the amount of business Fender and GC do, they havemore pull than the local tech or you as an individual buyer. Right or wrong thats just how it is. Make a huge stink and tell them you want it put right under warranty or you want your money back. Like ByF said, don't let up until they are handling it. You shouldn't be doing any legwork on this at all IMO, espescially if its under warranty. I would also tell GC that you are not going away until it gets taken care of even if it takes 10 necks and costs them a fortune shipping. Good luck though, and I hope your health continues to improve. That really is the main thing

Fender sucks. Terrible company. Sorry to hear it, best of luck getting it resolved.

What experiences are you basing this on?

Anyways, I have dealt with Fender a few times on repair issues and they were great to deal with. Not Sadowsky or Roscoe great, but great for such a large company.

The issue IMO is that the retailers you are dealing with are morons. Get Fender to recommend a reliable retailer (even a GC would likely be better) and take/ship it to them.

Fender IME always stands behind their products while under warranty but remember than they don't generally do warranty work direct. They can only do so much to ensure their network of mom and pop music stores have a clue about their products.
