Fender Troubles...big time

If you read the OP you'd see that I've called them several times and have gotten no where! He's repeated several times in the past he'd help but the service and communication has been kinda iffy, I'm hoping we're on the right track now to getting it completely taken care of with no miscommunications. Him calling is a fantastic sign and I am going to trust him at his word, hes been friendly and super courteous this entire time!
My first dealings with Fender was through my guitar rep at Sam Ash. He spoke politely with them and let them know I was a Big consumer of their products. When dealing with any large company always get names and titles, never rant or tell them you'll take your business elsewhere. Always ask what can be done, who will do it and how long it will take. My cousin ordered a Custom Shop custom classic V through Sam ash, we found out month's later there was no sku created for the bass meaning the order never went through! That was not Fenders fault. My guitar rep found this out when we tried to track what was going on. we took the order from that store and my guy ordered it directly! We had the bass approximately 10 month's later! It is up to the retail establishment initially to follow up with problems like mentioned above and be diligent about the repair. This is what another poster was talking about when they said use a reputable dealer.

Another thing, in 2007 I purchased a NOS Custom Shop custom classic jazz. The bass was a managers special and came without COA and case candy. The bass had a few dings and chips and a hairline crack in the binding but was brand new. I emailed Fender and had a reply the same day! They told me the bass was made in 1997, the year before the limited warranty took place. He told me if the crack affected the neck to take it to a Custom Shop dealer and the dealer would contact them to see If Fender would fix the bass free or not that it all depended on the cause of the crack.

Ok, good news! I talked to the rep and we decided on a little place in Fort Worth, Fl, to go ahead and take the bass to. Well, I walk in and talk to them and find out the owner is in Italy with Richard Bona! and he also does work for Will Lee, Victor Wooten, and when he was still alive, Jaco Pastorious. The guy I spoke with was super nice and played/looked over the bass, and unfortunately for me, it has a ton of issues... Anyway, I asked around and as you can tell, the repair place was highly regarded and recommended. It might take a while till I see my bass as they have quite a bit of work to do with other gear, if I need a new neck it could take around 3-4 weeks.

I am very satisfied with Fender and these repair techs as both sides have promised me nothing but total satisfaction! BTW the name of the repair shop is Kaufman Danzer Instruments, what a great place to do business with! They also mentioned they do a lot of work with Talkbassers and that they get a lot of e-mails from us asking about how it was to work with Jaco!:bassist:

Mike, I'm going to have to quote this post so I can read it without drooling over your avatar:D

Glad to see your on your way to getting your bass fixed.

BTW Did they say what all the issues were?

Keep us posted,
God Bless, Ray

Haha thanks, I knew the avatar would be a hit on here!

Well, hes stumped on what the issue is so thats why its serious. The frets have been leveled and the nut is perfect as its been lowered and filed down, but he did say there was a 'funny' looking fret, the 2nd or 3rd, but it couldn't possibly explain all the other problems. When I find out I'll let you know more, hopefully it'll be fixed 100% this time!

I'm glad to hear things are going well now. There's no doubt that this is a problem that Fender has to deal with, regardless of the sale price of the instrument. The warranty should still be in tact.

I just have to say, this is the worst advice:
Man that is really bad, but I'm gonna say one thing. It's not the prettiest thing to do but it is the game. If you got it for $499, flip it for a massive profit, pay some medical bills and start over with something else.

You wouldn't want someone to do it to you, so why would you do it to someone else? :scowl:

I'll add you to my list of TBers to avoid doing business with. ;)

To the OP, stay on Fender, the squeaky wheel indeed gets the grease.

Nope, not the humidity. I live in Florida, and the worst I have to do is a tweak when the weather changes. It's a green neck, or a neck made with wood that hasn't been properly cured.

That, or a neck with a flaw in the wood such as a weak point, knot or twist in the grain. In short, wood from a less than prime source. Or any or all of the above, on top of being green. And as an earlier post mentioned, there are several different lines of Fender that have this issue so this is most definitely a Fender factory QC issue.....

That being said, if anyone ever wanted to know the benefit of a Sadowski or Lakland or (insert name here) Fender style bass....I'd bet this would never happen with one of their basses and if it did, it would be fixed. Period.
And after saying that it also occurs to me that given the size of Fender vs a smaller boutique builder, it may take longer to resolve issues just as a matter of fact. I am not down on Fender, nor am I bashing them.

Big Mike, I am glad to hear your bass is on it's way. Keep us informed and hopefully your bass will be what it should have been when you get it back.

Dude, this smells like a
rats1-9807.jpg

Methinks the original seller knew he had a dog on his hands, hence the fire sale price. So at the end of the day by doing the honourable thing and not reselling it, bassically you've got firewood. Take it out and burn the damn thing, film it and put it on youtube with a quick explanation as to why.
Odds are you might get a call from a certain company asking what they can do to correct the situation, and hence end the show, if so take 'em for everything you can get.
Good Luck and Good Hunting, and for God's sake man get well soon.
:D

I thought I would revisit this thread as new issues have arose. The initial work and set up by Kaufman was impeccable, and I highly recommend him to anyone in and around Southeast Florida. The 3rd replacement neck when it first came in was issue free (minus a "weird" 3rd or 4th fret, I forget which at this point in time). I had to limit my bass playing for an extended period of time due to progressing health issues, however in recent months I finally found some good news medically concerning my heart and over all health, turns out I had long term Lymes Disease which was never properly diagnosed :eyebrow:. Anyway I began playing heavily again in the past few months and the Jazz felt pretty stiff and decided it could be that the DR High Beams might be a little more tension than I would like right now and decided to switch strings. As I took the strings off and began oiling up the neck and halfway thru putting the new set of strings on I noticed something peculiar, the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and the 9th, 10th and 15th frets were starting to come up and there is a noticeable gap between the bottom of the fret and its slot. (I will post pictures sometime tmrw). After putting on the new strings, the neck bowed right back up on me and will not take any truss rod adjustments. I don't know what else to say or think at this point before I make a phone call to Kaufman and Fender on Monday, but I'm totally bummed out that I have to go through all this again and I'm beyond the fender warranty.

.

Flip it for a a massive profit? It's a bad bass and you think he should pass it on to someone else who'll then have a bad bass and no warranty?

That's pretty screwed up morality right there.
