To be honest, this comparison showed that great players sound good on anything decent. Both preamps are versatile, they just go about it differently.

Fender vs. Sadowsky Preamp: Bass Bonedo

To be honest, this comparison showed that great players sound good on anything decent. Both preamps are versatile, they just go about it differently.
Both are good, just recently changed to the Sadowsky pre myself from Fenders preamp. I can't live without a tone pot. That just makes the sadowsky preamp more useable when you can use it in both active and passive. Nothing wrong with Fenders onboard preamp, pretty good also.

Sounds like Fender has finally sorted out their active bass preamp. The Fender active basses I have go back to 2008, at which time the switch out to Sadowsky was more of a no-brainer for me. This current Fender preamp is both more tidy in the cavity and sounds a whole lot better.

For me, the two-band Sadowsky preamp boosts in just the right way. It seems to me that for instance the E on the second fret d-string sounds fatter and more useful when the bass is boosted maybe 10-15%. On a three band, the bass boost seems to not grab that note, and unfortunately the mid eq also fails to get that note.
