I own a 2005 Fender American Jazz and it has the s-1 switch which is probably one of the best features on it. There are no "bad" years for fender imo. Everyone just has a different opinion.

Will two Fender's with the same pickups sound drastically different ?
Ive compared my 60th anniversary Fender jazz (2006 s-1 switching) with my aunts 64 fender jazz and honestly they aren't all that different. I think the 64 shined a little more in the low end while mine has a nicer midrange character to it. It's all just a preference.
When i was shopping for the jazz bass i got though let me tell you i had to sort through A LOT of jazz basses to find "the one". Il agree I'm generally not a fan of that era of fender but hey there are winners from every generation.
Since my last post, I have picked up my 2010 Fender Precision V AM STD. I ordered this bass and did not play it beforehand.
This one has great vibe and tone. The fit & finish are great, about what I'd expect in an instrument in this price range. Weight is 8.8lbs, and overall joy to play is a 9+.
It takes a bit of getting used to the extra range...but a small thing really.
Both the 2002 and the 2010V have great Fender tone & character. Both were very nicely built.
Good and bad from all eras. Play them yourself to see what you like.

As an example, the 2003-2007 "S-1" models are quite frankly poop.
I've never owned a Fender and maybe this is a dumb question but what makes one Fender a great bass compared to another that is not considered a great bass ? Weight ? Quality ? Will two Fender's with the same pickups sound drastically different ?
Extra Range ?? are you talking about frets Or ??
i have a new one coming as well.
I really look forward to some of the replies for this thread. I mean, the OP has already mentioned it in the opening question!
If the future is like the past,in 10-15 yrs.,the '03-'07 Fender S-1's?? Everybody will be r-a-v-i-n-g about what great basses these are!!
My point:
What, ten yrs. or so back,70's Fenders were considered junk. Now? Huh,just check the prices on e-Bay. Hell,5 yrs. ago,you couldn't give away an early-80's Fender American. Have you seen the prices on such axes as an early-80's P-Bass Spec.???
If it's good,it's good. I know what I have. I haven't purchased a bass in 15 yrs..... BTW,I'm not proud of that.
The reason that people tend to revere older basses, and see them as some kind of "they don't build 'em like they used to" holy grail is because most of the truly horrendous ones, of any era, have already been filtered out of the system by years, or decades, of users throwing the bad ones in the junk or parting them out.
Funny, i think the best years ever for fender were 84-87 when most stuff was all MIJ.
