Fender's Antigua Finish

I could be wrong but I thought they were made around '80-'81. There is one at a guitar center close to me for like $800. It plays great and looks pretty cool.

Just so everyone knows the correct information, Antigua Fender's came in ALL models that they made in late 1978 and 1979, even the more base models like the Musicmaster and Mustang's guitars and basses. They are NOT so rare, it's just that they weren't and still aren't that popular. The paint also chipped off a bit too easily, perhaps a paint mixture problem. I think the best looking ones were the Strats, Telecasters and the P and J bases. The Coronado, already a cheap looking guitar (because it was made in S Korea) looked even cheaper looking in Antigua. I have a 79 Antigua Stratocaster "hardtail", and like most late 70's Strats, it only sounds "OK", not great.

I have a reissue Antigua pbass. The best pbass I've owned. I did switch the pickups out to 5% overwound lindy fralins. The finish always starts a convo, I love that bass!

I had a 1978 Antigua Jazz and a 1978 Antigua P. Both very heavy, the J had nitro finish, the P had poly. Both were 1978. Go figure. I traded them as a pair for a 1965 Sunburst P. I don't really like Antigua.

I have a 78 P-bass Antigua finish. Hate it. How can I tell what sort of paint it is? I plan to repaint it (heresy!).

I can't sell it, had it since 1980 and am too attached to it. I do acknowledge that your advice is good. I'm a little torn between keeping a bass I don't really like the look of (not ashamed though) the way it is so its value is not reduced in the marketplace or making it look nice. If I don't intend to sell, then what's wrong with 'fixing it up'? Long ago I replaced the string tree, scratch plate and tailpiece with Fender brass parts. I don't have the original of those original parts and more. Doing nothing and leaving it as it is has a certain attraction as well.
