I hope Fenton didn't quit his day job. Looks like that bass has a few quality control issues.

That's because it's been mutilated...as has the second one pictured- quite severely!
They are actually very nice, but often modified/wrecked because they aren't worth much, and often get confused with poor quality japanese things cos of the quirky looks
Just picked up a Burns Weill or possibly 'weill' bass myself, so I thought I'd post it here to keep the info together.
It's got a super narrow 'broomstick' neck, with an off centred V profile. Decidedly odd, but it sort of makes sense in the hand! Also has a coaxial output jack...
This needs a bit of work (is there such thing as one that doesn't?) but just a bit of tweaking really- a small secondary scratchplate, and an etched name plate- plus the neck pickup needs rewinding. Overall though- it is as pleasingly unique as when it left the factory 50 years ago!

Fenton-Weill basses and guitars were made in the UK in the early 60's. Jim Burns had an involvement with them before launching his own company.

I can see why you'd say that. See that second picture- the one with the little red scratchplate? That was last seen on ebay, sprayed gold all over, and chopped into about 12 pieces, set on a board- so it's not too far off your suggestion. Co-sine on the 'drawing of a bass from a cartoon'...my thoughts exactly.
Nor do us Brits! They were made in very small quantities...I've seen thirty or forty suggested for the Burns Weills!
