agreedWell, it was a heartbreaking end, but as I said before the world cup: Getting anything past the group stages was good for us. We had our chances, and Timmy H put on the performance of a lifetime. We were beat by a better side, and I can never complain about that. Sad, but I have my head held high and am proud of my country's performance.
Silver linings: Julian Green is going to be an absolute force to be reckoned with in 2018. He is the future of US soccer.
I also appreciate the well-wishers from our non-USA TBers, with exception of Titus, who took quite the grumpy attitude towards our side from the get-go. I still love you anyway, Titus.

Naw, I heard way too many expecting to easily win their group, including an absolute gem of a comment that "not one of the Italians would make it into our squad".

Totally off topic, but did anyone see the young Aussie, Nick Kyrgios, give Rafa a hiding at Wimbledon? Not bad for a 19 year old ranked 144 in the world.
I'm a casual American fan. I don't think of England as a powerhouse, but they aren't "just got passed qualifiers on luck" type of team either. I do like their uniforms and their fancy accents.

Tuesday's World Cup match ended in a heartbreaking loss for the U.S. Men's team, but they had at least one accomplishment to brag about.
Goalkeeper Tim Howard made 16 saves, the most on record in a World Cup match.
Belgium managed to sneak in two goals in the 120-minute game to beat the U.S. 2-1, but Howard's performance didn't go unnoticed.
As one ESPN announcer put it, "he does not deserve to be on the losing side."
Invalid Link Removed quickly became a fan favorite, for his remarkable skills as a goalie and for his signature beard.
Moments after the game ended, he told ESPN, "I will never forget this night."

The sad part is that the US could not wrest control away from Belgium to ease up on the number shots on goal.
Exactly. The good news is that Howard made a record number of saves. The bad news is that Howard made a record number of saves.
I've gotta say that I was disappointed. The U.S. certainly displayed plenty of heart and grit and courage and whatnot, and it was certainly an accomplishment to get through their group no matter how it was accomplished. And I'm proud of them for all that, but I really had hoped to see more evidence that the U.S. was beginning to narrow the vast gap in technical quality between themselves and the top teams. The match against Portugal made me start thinking that this might be true. But today's match, like the one against Germany, again offered a stark contrast between a team that makes the game look easy and a team that still makes it look really hard.

Not sure on the "heartbreaking" aspect. The US weren't ever in that game until the last few minutes. If Howard didnt have the game of a lifetime, that was easily a 4-1 or 5-1 game.
