FIFA World Cup 2014

Totally off topic, but did anyone see the young Aussie, Nick Kyrgios, give Rafa a hiding at Wimbledon? Not bad for a 19 year old ranked 144 in the world.

I think you and I are the only tennis fans on this forum, and I rarely watch it on TV anymore. I'm wearing a t-shirt that says "TENNIS" on it, right now. I do hope the Aussies make a come back with some superstars. It's not tennis without a strong Aussie presence.

Exactly. The good news is that Howard made a record number of saves. The bad news is that Howard made a record number of saves.

I've gotta say that I was disappointed. The U.S. certainly displayed plenty of heart and grit and courage and whatnot, and it was certainly an accomplishment to get through their group no matter how it was accomplished. And I'm proud of them for all that, but I really had hoped to see more evidence that the U.S. was beginning to narrow the vast gap in technical quality between themselves and the top teams. The match against Portugal made me start thinking that this might be true. But today's match, like the one against Germany, again offered a stark contrast between a team that makes the game look easy and a team that still makes it look really hard.

Part of my disappointment is that the US is actually better than what they showed in this tournament, but 90% of the Americans watching this World Cup don't watch the qualifiers or friendlies. They only see the team every four years. The US played uncharacteristically defensive, with 3 or 4 defensive midfielders playing at the same time. And in this match they made a ton of little mistakes they wouldn't ordinarily make. Chalk it up to nerves.

I'm surprised more people aren't talking about Wondo's miss. He's going to have nightmares about that one for the rest of his life.

Not sure on the "heartbreaking" aspect. The US weren't ever in that game until the last few minutes. If Howard didnt have the game of a lifetime, that was easily a 4-1 or 5-1 game.

What's the matter with you cheeze? You mean you aren't draped in a flag with your face painted getting all emotional and patriotic?

I want to laugh right in the face of that stupid, stupid man who was doing all that rabble rousing "I BELIEVE..." stuff.

Titus, you ARE Malcolm Tucker! :D

Grumpy aul man time:
I'm already seriously and irrationally effed off with these effing sponsored ads being posted in threads.
I mean, I know TB has to pay the rent but in the middle of threads fergawdssake?
Breaks up the zennish flow of the meditative reading process.
Or something.

Well if everyone coughed up the site wouldn't have to rely on advertisement revenue I guess.

I had a good chuckle last night at the crying American children with their stupid face paint running down their stupid tear-soaked faces. Ha. Back to burgers and baseball.

Watch it more given that a Scot is the reigning Wimbledon champion ;)

Well, he was British when he won.

We used to always have it on one of the computers in the office, usually the Women's, was like having a porno sound track at work :p

I think that's true for a number of teams, many have been off form during the tournament. But that's what can make it interesting and open up opportunity for the smaller teams to break through!

You're a very spiteful man, Mr Crow.

No malice or spite here, just 30 years of watching international players turn in match winning performances for their countries then give it significantly less on those cold, wet Wednesday nights in January away to Oxford or Morecambe in the fourth round of the Carling Cup.

In fact, the verb 'to Sheedy' meant to swan around doing f'all in Everton blue, but get grass stains all over your shorts within 5 minutes of wearing Irish green.

Bloody Micks.

No malice or spite. Gotcha.

US will play better in the second half.

The best futebol players are not the best because of their athleticism. Football is about skill more than any other team sport, and being a big guy is actually a disadvantage. Once guys get bigger than about 6'3" or 6'4" they're noticeably clumsy compared to the shorter guys.

As an example, look at Messi, Xavi, and Iniesta. Do you think they are great due to their athleticism? Do you realize there are tons of athletes all over the world who are big, strong, fast, and can jump high but couldn't make it as footballers even though they grew up playing the sport?

The US will get better when more of our kids play the sport in in a serious, dedicated way, and with better coaching. We're not going to win the World Cup with a bunch of buffed 6'6" guys on the field.
I can understand and appreciate this. I was sort of joking with the LeBron mention. Although I will still say I think Randy Moss could have done it. He's not a really huge guy (maybe 200 lbs), but he (was) super athletic.
