Yep. I'm 59 and my parents wouldn't let me play football back in the 1970s. One of my mother's cousins almost died from an injury sustained in a high school football game, so it was out of the question for me. I took up soccer, and absolutely loved it. Still do. I haven't played in a long time, but I coached one of my daughter's local youth teams, which was a blast.
I was rooting for England today, but I knew they were in trouble when they circled the wagons and abandoned any serious offense. No way were Messi & Co. going to be kept out of the net when they could apply that much sustained pressure. I think the final will be a fantastic game.
I was working a day job with a guy and I would kneel down to do a certain task. He'd do the same thing, and was obviously VERY uncomfortable and a little shaky doing it. So one day he asks me, 'You ever play football in school?' I said no, I was in bands. He related he had, and a year of college ball before he had to have BOTH knees replaced, and that was that.
I used to get my b+++s busted all the time by my friends in high school, when after school they're going to football practice (I mean, this was redneck Texas of course) while I went to my piano lessons. You can just imagine . . . .
Well you know what? They never made a dime playing football, yet later they'd have to pay a cover charge to come see old JW, their high school buddy, in whatever band I was in, and I made a good living playing music.
England. Sigh. Despite Tuchel's strategy of playing all defense in the latter stages of the match, he's supposedly still in good standing with the powers that be, as the FA is still backing him to continue on as manager. Hopefully he learned something from yesterday's backfiring of that strategy.
FWIW, I'm leaning toward Spain in the Final against Argentina. By the slightest of margins.

I expected a sleeper in the 3rd place match.
Not so.

I was worried by the end of the first half that France would leave humiliated. Glad they at least put up a really good fight. I really had no strong preference in this match. Glad I got a good one.

The Argentine keeper is amazing, but MAN I hate the flopping. By both teams.
He really was great. Could've been a lot worse for Argentina.
I didn't really have a strong tie to either finalist, and was leaning toward Spain as I'd posted earlier. But as I watched the match, I quickly became 100% on Spain's side, due to the overall tactics of the Argentine players. Big difference between playing with intensity and playing dirty. Their post-match behavior cemented any doubts I'd had about their lack of sportsmanship and graciousness. And to think I'd rooted for them back in 2022!
I'm a Chelsea fan but watching Enzo Fernandez yesterday was not the same guy who suits up in the EPL. Perhaps national pride amped up his demeanor but he doesn't show that same degree of tenacity in England.

Spain so thoroughly outplayed Argentine that it would have been criminal if they had lost in a shootout.
Part of me is glad it's over now. Hell of a way to end it all with that game.
SO many games. Feel I need a vacation from all that but it's time to go back to my ****** Galaxy and so-so United.
Kinda wish we had an on going soccer/football thread on here. Maybe an all things soccer instead of just EPL, MLS or anything other leage. The USWNT thread has been going on strong

Agreed 100%. I think Messi is the greatest player I've ever seen, so on that level I always kind of enjoy watching him (even though, like too many superstars in too many sports, he gets too many superstar calls and whines to refs way too much). However, the way Argentina acted during and after the game (especially but not solely that jerk Paredes) left me disliking that national team intensely.
Such a difference from the crazy France-England match from the day before. Much more respectful, and it seemed like they were all hanging out on the field afterwards like they're all friends. And maybe they are, with how many probably play together during league season.
True story combining our love of futbol and music. Rod Stewart is / was a soccer maniac and, during shows, would kick balls into the crowd…he was apparently a little TOO good. A friend of mine was in the better seats and and the target of a “line drive”. As a reflexive defensive move, she raised her arms to deflect & protect her head…the blow broke bones in her forearm. Yes, she sued but can’t recall who was held responsible: venue, Rod Stewart and management co., etc.

Wow. In 2008 I was seeing Iron Maiden at Madison Square Garden. I think it's pretty well known how into soccer they are, especially Steve Harris. During the show, they lost power on stage. While waiting for it to come back, they started kicking around a soccer ball. But it stayed on stage.
This happened ~25 years ago. The real pisser was the lady was a hairdresser so getting clipped in one wing was problematic.
