Holy crap! I paid ~$350.00 for mine six years ago off the bay.
I've pulled the frets and have the string height well above 1/4' at the octave. It holds its own around a campfire with finger picking guitars.
Built like a tank too.

LaBella black nylon tape wounds. Nineteen bucks from the Carvin site.I like my Takamine - it's great for working out songs without an amp, and playing acoustically with friends at home and on vacation, but I'm not fond of the strings; too zingy, and lacking on bottom.
What kind of strings are you using?
