Finally starting my first build thread

BTW - I see we have about the same type of shop (read: "sparse" with respect to cool a$$ power tools) ;)

Diogenes, that particular shop pictured is my Grandfather's shop and it's anything but sparse. It is big, so the larger machines are spread out, but grandpa's been collecting tools for 70+ years and there hasn't been anything I've needed that he hasn't had, so sparse is a tad off

MY shop, however, is what one would consider sparse. it fits in a 12x15 shed:

currently I'm busy treking through abrasive hell until she's nice and smooth.

My dad and grandpa have taken it upon themselves to be my inspectors of the project. That means I can't move on from my sanding phase until it meets their approval, so I could be on this step a while. On one hand, I'm not too thrilled about their level of scrutiny, but on the other hand, I like that they're not gonna let me half-ass anything

I still am unable to wrap my head around how incredibly purple that wood is.

How wide is the fretboard? From the angles we've seen it at, it looks (to me) like it's really wide fora four-banger.

Although it is really colorful in person, some of the color may be due to lighting shifting the color when I photograph it. I even thought that it looked blue in some of the pics. I'm pretty sure that the fingerboard is standard four string size since I took the measurements right off of the bass I cannibalized for parts

What's it worth to ya, Gruda?

a hug! :D my hugs are really good? have you ever been hugged by a 300 pound man? or i could pimp out my wife..... well she wouldnt like that :)

Wow, I really hope that all this royalty check business is all in good fun (it's so hard to tell if something is sarcastic on the internet sometimes!). :ninja:

On a different note, the bass looks awesome so far!

Of course, I'm not one to ask for royalties on a design I copied myself. On the other hand, I'm also not not one to refuse a check should gruda feel so compelled to cut it.

I didn't know you could get away with clover tuners on open heads. I think you may have forgot something about the head though. take a string and see how it goes from the tuner to the nut. You may have to bevel the inside of the head, so the strings can properly pass

I see what you mean. I may just have to thin down my little purple TR cover and do a little sanding to allow some string clearance. other than that I'm quite happy with it.

It is looking pretty nice. any issues using clover tuners in that configuration (for example is it hard to install/remove the bushings, ect.)? I have always wanted to do an open head with clovers, like a domesticated version of an upright bass's head/tuners, but always got the feeling some problem would come up.
can you get a pic of the head without the TR cover? I was curious to see how you would pull that off. whats the weight at with all that super crazy purpleheart? di you decide what you would do to finish the fingerboard?

the clovers look nice, but I wil never use that tuner style on that headstock style ever again simply because of the ferrules. first, I had to chamfer the holes from the inside with a dremel then (with much help from my grandfather) use a system of a nut a hex bolt and a bunch of washers to draw it into the hole. Then when we got it in as far as it would go that way, we finished it off with a C-clamp. so far it all weighs circa 11lbs, but it looks and feels heavier (but I expected worse). For the finger board i really like the superglue method, but want to test it on something before I pull the trigger. If I can that idea I'll go with a little Poly.
