To be honest, I don't pay much attention to what the fretboard's made out of, as long as it's smooth and I don't get splinters. If I want a particular bass, then whatever it's got for a fretboard is fine with me. It's just something to hold the frets, and cover up the rout for the truss rod; for me, the Ebanol one on my Kramer lumie works just as well as the ebony one on my Alembic. The fingerboard on a fretless? Don't have one (and don't particularly want one, either), so I couldn't say for sure; probably ebony, as that seems to be the wood of choice for serious fretless players.. And I'd probably wind up with tapewounds on it, too.
Strings? Depends on what I want from a particular bass. Some have flats; some have rounds (I prefer nickel); some have tapes. Just depends on the sound I'm after...
