Fingerboard and Strings - POLL

Each bass is different so I don't think there's any point in having "hard and fast" rules on this one. A string that works well on one rosewood boarded bass might not work as well on another rosewood boarded bass. Your ears will guide you better than your eyes... 
Why do you think that strings have to be matched to a certain fretboard?
The very slight tonal differences between rosewood and maple can be cancelled out by the slight twist of the tone knob. So buy the fretboard that you like the look of, and the strings you like the tone and feel of.
I use flats on all my basses because I like the tone and feel of them, I don't care what color the bass is or what materials it is made out of.

I prefer the brightness and definition of rounds any day of the week, but on fretless I use pressure wounds or flats out of necessity. If ss rounds didn't chew up fretless fingerboards it'd be DR Lo-riders all day urryday!

I get a lot of mileage from that first choice (rosewood/flats, maple/rounds). Two basses set up like that, combined with a little onboard EQ and technique, you can duplicate a whole bunch of tones.
All three of my current basses are rosewood. Every bass I've ever owned has been rosewood. I feel like I ought to get a maple one sometime.
Current setup is Precision bass with flats, fretless and fretted Jazz basses both with rounds.
I've recently been seriously digging leeks. Chopped leek and garlic sauteed in a bit of lightly salted olive oil seems to be a very tasty base for just about anything.

I had a '65 Fender Jazz that I bought used in 1966. It had the rosewood fingerboard. The 78 Jazz in my avatar has the same neck but it has a maple neck/fingerboard. I prefer the sound of rounds and find that the maple neck on my current bass has far more sustain than my '65 Jazz did (was stolen from me in 1976). Outside of that, they feel like the same bass.

I associate maple with rounds, and rosewood with flats... That being said, it would also depend on the bass! On a P, anything goes (but I'd probably not go for the rounds on maple combo). On a J, I cannot see myself putting flats on maple. On a SR, I'd probably only consider maple with flats. Etc... inconsistent and biased, none of it based on any logic, just what i like to think goes together
