Firefly or Reddi

Steve, what I said about the LMII only applies to the LMII. The LMIII has a Di which I'm led to understand is an improvement over the LMII's DI and I've not tried it, so my comment would be N/A to your situation.

Thanks Jimmy. I take it that the essence of your point probably still applies but perhaps to a lesser degree. Running REDDI into LMIII and then feeding the house out of the amp's DI probably degrades the REDDI tone somewhat in terms of what goes to the house.

Thats really only something that you can determine. But somehow you would have to try it out i guess.

But i think that you may be causing yourself more grief in the long run.. Because what might be great for your on stage amp may not work for FOH and Vise Versa.
Whats good in one many not work for the other much less both at the same time.. I think you are ready to create a possible mess.
Thats why i let each do their own thing.. .
Unless of course your bass rig has the same speakers etc as the PA...
Then again, from experience, there is always the exception to all rules when it comes to making music. I think that i have found my niche though..

I have a REDDI Makers KGB2 bt A Design.. It is a dual mono preamp/ keyboard/guitar/bass DI,,, It would do exaclty what you are looking to do... It sort of has a SS REDDI without the tube sound.. Its Warm and PHAT.. Its on the level of API, NEVE preamp...

I'm sure the REDDI beats the Firefly and pretty much anything out there. The looks comment/thought is very secondary - just a nice bonus if it turns out to be a good choice. The real/main reason for thinking about the Firefly instead is that it can be used to feed my solid state amp and I'm guessing it would add some warmth there. The REDDI is not set up for that and some say that using a Y adapter to feed the amp and the house degrades the REDDI signal.

I had a UA Solo 610.. Great Mic Pre DI.. But i sold it when i got my first REDDI...
I had it on a session with a grammy winning producer.. I just got the REDDI.. he said lets A/B them. he said put the UA in its case we'll use this red box.. Also told me with a smile on his face, dont ever show up without that box if you wanna work with me again. haha. he bought one a few weeks later too..
Again.. it may not be your cup of tea. Different people like different things

Not to a power amp. I want to go into the preamp section of my Markbass LMIII to warm things up and still have use of the tone controls. If I'm going to spend that kind of money on a direct box, it will have to enhance the sound from my amp also. The UA looks awesome, but the thru is unaffected - it's a pass through...same as the REDDI.

Thanks for the info and ideas. I'll probably ponder this one for awhile, do some additional research and also see how much I end up playing out. Sounds like its great for studio use too where in that case it could run straight into my amp (which has an xlr input). Thinking about it more, I suppose it makes little difference in a live situation where in my case the amp would be primarily a monitor so I can hear myself. For now I'll use the xlr output on my amp.

Well that's not totally correct. I own a REDDI, and I can take the XLR from the REDDI into the front of my Markbass LM II. But generally speaking he is correct.

Yes, I resurrected a zombie thread. I'm thinking about doing what you describe with my LMIII either with a Y adapter or use the LMIII DI to go back to the house. Are you using your REDDI like that or just saying it can be done? Curious about your results. Also looking at the Firefly, but it doesn't seem to get any love on Talkbass.

Based on my experiences doing just that with an Ampeg micro, you're right. It does improve the sound of the amp and amp's DI, but it's not as good as the REDDI by itself.

thank you for this thread. the DI shootout is amazing. fantastic knowledge and sound. i've owned the reddi, jdi, evil twin, and countryman in the past.

the evil twin was never fat enough sounding for me, and the countryman just didn't sound good for me. it was always the REDDI or the JDI. For me the REDDI sounded good, but Jimmy and svt and others go a little far with it. not b15 sounding to me (owned a 65 b-15n), not amp replacing sounding enough. It's a nice thick tubey sounding DI (definitely the best of the tube DI's), but it ain't worth 700 bucks and it doesn't tour well (one of mine got totaled when i did a europe tour). the JDI does it for me. That plus a REAL tube amp and i'm golden in the studio or live.

funny cause for the longest i was all against Solid State DI's, but the tube sound i like isn't preamp tubes, it's power tubes being pushed, and i've come to realize a nice passive DI really gives me the clean sound i need and the fundamental, and the amp mic'd gives the color. their powers combined and i'm happy.
Have you ever tried the JDI at the speaker level coming off a tube amp out?

yeah i don't know of any DI's where the thru is affected by the tone. the whole point of it is to not be so you have DI tone and Amp tone.

I get why you want it, i think the radial has another send which would work for you that might be it.

Yeah I have a Firefly and I've owned a REDDI in the past. I love the REDDI but you can't send the affected signal to your amp. With the Firefly you can do that by selecting "POST" on the AUX OUT. It means the amp gets to share the same signal as the actual DI is sending to the board. REDDI only has a thru jack. I used to have to split my output signal on the REDDI in order to drive my amp with the tube section of the DI but it came with a lot of ground noise issues. The Firefly is as quiet as a mouse in comparison. Great DI.

Hi
I know the thread's last content is from fall last year, but I didn't want to open a new one...
Still some longterm users here?
Has anyone built the firefly in a rack? I like most of my stuff built into these.

BTW: shouldn't this thread do better in recording or livesound?
