I would probably do the pickup surround on both pickups. Might look a little more balanced.

First bass - neck through.

I made this control cavity cover the other night while I was fiddling with pickup rings.
I also wen ahead and drilled for tuners and controls.
And now its finally starting to feel like a bass.

Digging the Cozy Coupe in the background, miss those days with my kids. Ever notice how they always carefully close the door when they get in the Coupe? Oh, nice bass too.....

It's mostly bikes and skateboards these days, but they still shoehorn themselves into that red wonder from time to time. Everyone says this, but it's true - They grow up so fast!

Wow... I can still hear the glee from my son when he used to tool around in his Coupe... he's in college now. Wow, how that time flies.
And yes, the bass is coming along beautifully! And fwiw, I like the pickup rings.
After sitting with the routing error a few days, here's what I've decided to do (I think):
Whereas, the pickup rings look ok, but they don't achieve my original vision of a clean top with direct mounted pups,
And whereas larger pickups are manufactured
Therefore, I've decided to go with larger pickups and expand the cavities to match.
I picked up a set of Ibanez DX4 pups off of eBay (from the btb200 series) that are 4 1/8" x 1 9/16" and ironically almost exactly the current size of the larger cavity (I need to expand the larger cavity 1/16" from 1 1/2" to 1 9/16").
Are they the same caliber as the Aggie pups? No. But they fit the other requirements and they'll allow me to get this prototype buttoned up in reasonable fashion. They also happen to be the same size as Invalid Link Removed should I ever feel the need to splash out on something more expensive.
I'm planning to wire them passive V/V/T

You're not crazy! Sounds like a good plan, especially since this is a prototype.
I agree, this isn't crazy, but a good 'design change' to give you the overall look you were going for. I suspect that those pickups will sound pretty good!
Sounds good. Besides, if you have an extra set of pickups then you have to build another bass. It's just a fact.

There may be a wenge top single cut kicking around in my brain.
Still waiting on the pickups, but the tuners came today, so I threw on an old set of chromes to see how it felt fretless style.
Almost makes me wish I was building (or could in fact accurately play) a fretless.
At least I've confirmed that everything lines up and that when I get frets on there things will fall in line very nicely. It's fun to play. Very resonant with the Spanish cedar body.
I'm thinking I'll probably have to go with a lacquer finish just to give that soft wood some protection. Otherwise I'd be tempted to go with Danish Oil.

Haha, no, but we always end up bringing another handfull home when we hit the beach. It's our mini natural history museum. Top case is fossils, bottom two are shells.
New pickups came and I routed the body last night. They're a perfect fit. Now, hopefully they won't suck.
I just know I'm rarely happy with an ad hoc fix. This feels right.
