A weird old Univox violin bass, in a mom-and-pop music store near my hometown. I went back later to buy it, but it was gone.

Dad would let me wear and bang on his Basses sometimes as a kid. I can’t count that.
When I was a preteen he had a LPB Jazz bass that spoke to me, I would carefully play it when he wasn’t around. He traded it and I actually cried.

You should have kept that one. Good band, I'm just letting their list play on YouTube. Great singer, at times he sounds a little like Curtis Mayfield. These guys rocked.

Fender Jazz Bass Special MIJ 1985. Pretty mediocre, traded for an Yamaha BB300, much better sounding bass.
Way back around 1967 or maybe '68 when I was in the 10th grade, one of my buddies' father borrowed a used pre-CBS Jazz Bass. My friend let me come over and look at it. I got to hold it. It was the first bass that I ever touched in my life.

Shergold Marathon 4 string, lent to me by my dad’s friend who was giving me lessons (thanks Mike!), played it for a couple of months until I got my first bass, a Squier Jazz. I’d love to play a Marathon again, just for old times sake, knock out a few tunes from the Blues Brothers soundtrack that I was learning back then.

I got my first Fender P bass new in 1970 because of the cover of the red Grand Funk album, it was actually a Jazz on the cover but I didn't know the difference. Put it on layaway and worked in a sweatshop all summer to pay it off, 250.00/case, sunburst/tort, the action was so low compared to my former Japanese bass that I raised the action.
This is the first electric bass I ever touched - a 1970s Fender Musicmaster Bass and a Fender Bassman Amp from the same year; I've posted this photo before. It was owned by the junior high school I attended in Parkersburg, West Virginia. The bass had what I have been told was a factory-installed Ovation pickup. I started on upright bass in 1976 and a few months later started playing the electric bass. This photo was taken in 1978 as we were preparing for an outdoor concert in the school's courtyard. I heard that the school's band room was burglarized a few years after this photo was taken and the bass was stolen; I don't know if it was ever recovered.

I had something very similar. Not sure if it was a Kay or Univox. It was unfortunately stolen.

My Dad, who plays saxophone and clarinet, was playing a gig with Dallas at the Riverside Inn. Once in a while I got to go and sit at the back of the bandstand when he played. After the show, Dallas asked me to carry his bass out to his car for him. That was probably around 1975 or '76. He was a really cool guy. My Dad always loved playing with him.
