First Bass You Got?

This bass.

Unbadged, redburst short-scale with gold-foil pickup, purchased from WoolCo. Traded it in for a Vox Cougar.

If I had not loaded it with Labella flats or had known about adjustable truss rods, I might have kept it.

I quit my original band playing guitar and bought a bass to join this guitarist in a cover band. I worked at guitar center at the time so I got an employee discount and bought a used MIA fender jazz. tone wise it's my favorite I've ever played but it developed a side bend to the neck. I had it about six or seven years and sold it back to the same guitar center I bought it from and got a five string peavey.

My first bass was one of those law-suit P-bass copy models by Memphis, when I was 12. I kept that thing around and unfortunately in a spur of the moment deal, I Pete Townsend this bass at a gig while playing a bar in the 80's. It was a fitting end of the set since we just did a Who medley.
The band signed it and the bar owner hung it up on the wall of the club. Not sure if the bar is still there or what happened to the bass.

I still have my first Fender, a '71 Telecaster Bass when I was 14. My parents loaned me the $200 to buy it. (had to mow a bunch of yards to pay it back).

It was a new Univox Hi-Flyer Bass probably a 1975 (I was like 12 years old). White. Traded it in on an Ibanez Blazer somewhere around 1978 or 79. Somewhere, there's a yearbook photo of me playing it at a middle school assembly...I'll have to dig it out for the old/stupid photo thread. :wacky:

The first one was a hand-me-down Imperial Semi-Hollow body MIJ bass from 2 Guys my brother gave me in 1971. A year later for my 12th birthday, my Dad bought me a 3/4 scale Fender Musicmaster. I now play a 1980 Ric 4003 and a 1974/75 Fender Jazz.

my 2nd bass was a BC Rich warlock...........it looked cool as hell, I wanted one because all the 80s bassists were playing one, but the ones they played were killer made in USA versions and mine was a 300 dollar bomb! I didnt keep it long.

..Mine was at my 10th birthday..I went to Sam Goody in Bucks County and got a ..BrandNew..1977 Univox...Sunburst with my Mom...I was torn between a BASS or a Drum set...I picked the bass...and I also got a lil.." STAGE 65 Amp...with.a.( Clipping Knob) ..lol..

My first bass was a black Squier Precision Bass, but I only had it for several months while I was taking my first set of lessons.

I upgraded to a Fender American Std. Jazz Bass with a maple fretboard in Placid Blue shortly after I started. I've had that one ever since, it's getting close to 13 years old now. I fell in love with how easy it was to play (compared to the P-bass I had), and I loved the way it looked. I wasn't thinking about tone at the time.

I remember that black Squier P-bass was not easy to play, it didn't feel like I could fret notes and move my hand around smoothly. It may have been a lemon, or maybe Squier was just worse back then, or maybe I am just not built for a Precision neck. I now own a Squier parts-P-bass made out of 2000-2001 parts. It has a Jazz neck though, but I'll say I do really love the way that P pickup sounds.

My first Bass was a 2001-2002 Squier Affinity P Bass in Metallic Blue. I got it in 2007, and it was pretty much a POS by then. Kept it for 3 more years until I got my Thunderbird.

Gave it to a cousin who wanted to learn bass. The neck relief on it was so bad by the time I got rid of it that my friends and I joked about using it as a longbow.

I love that bass. I want one of these badly.

Two questions; I'm already keeping an eye out for a pewter P-Bass Special for @Laurie Bass. Want me to do the same for you? Secondly, Squier also made Strats and straight-up Jazz basses in the same color. (I should know, I have all three! :smug:) If you answer "yes" to the first question, should I let you know if I find any of them or just the P-Bass Special?
