First Build, any tips tricks etc?????

not trying to call you out but when you say "oh it never dawned on me that it looked flying v-ishand sg-ish till after" that pisses me off sounds like your taking the credit for a design already made and put into production. if you like his guitar playing no one here will talk bad about your music tastes but just say"hey im thinking about making a bass version of ZW's guitar" dont try to make it sound like your idea

Your an idiot.

first off i was not trying to take credit for the design i was simply stating my opinion on how it looked in comparison to other pre-exsisting instruments. secondly, I have never heard of ZW or tht the sg and flying v had ever been combined. Besides i have decided not to go tht way with the bass body.

I drew these in study hall today.

Those old school bikes with the banana seat and really long front wheel thing(kinda chopper-ish) had an influence on this one. opinions?

well, i would deffinetly not use the first 2, the horns look very fragile. they would deffinetly break. the second one wouldnt be too bad.

yeah i see waht u mean the first one kinda looks like a shirt or dress kinda. i still like the one i modeled after my headstock. here are two more designs i dont really think they are tht great.

100_1479.jpg

this one started out as a rectangle nd i just tried to give curves(a lot). the top horn looks like an ell coming out of a cave.

100_1480.jpg

this one i think is rather amusing, but the parents wont let me make this one(figured), but if someone wants to try it i think it would be pretty darn sweet.

I cut out to templates today. on the first one i made the lower horn longer in an attempt to make a more comfortable curve for when i sit but i think it looks really crappy.

100_1484.jpg

so i just went with the original shape of the design. i screwed mt neck to the cardboard template to see how it looks.

i think is looks pretty darn good so far. Maybe i can get some wood today or sometime this weekend. any suggestions on wood would be appreciated.

thanks in advance.:D

you might consider tilting the whole body a couple degrees down, toward the floor, pivot it around the neck, it would just give you a little more wood around the pickups and such, as far as wood, im seeing an old classic, alder with a flamed maple top, hollow body maybe

a maple top sounds like a good idea if i could only find a tutorila on how to do one tht would be great.

so after the cardboard mock up i found out the lower horn was in the way. so i redrew it like 8 hundred times and i got it to where i think it should be ok and it still looks good.

i put all the electronics nd such in general placement. everything looks like it will have enough room.

my dad said he'll stop and get the wood either tomorrow or thursday. hopefully tomorrow. im gunna go with an alder body maple top like vbass suggested.

So last night i went shopping for some wood. i had ash or poplar in mind for the body with a maple top but, when i was at Home Depot browsing the woods i stoped at the poplar. right under the first board was a piece with blue green red brown all these colors.

when i saw this i fell in love!!!! I said screw a maple top this is gunna be the top and back!! So i got two 24 inch legths by 1 foot.
It was just barely wide enough for the body but, the color runs down the middle beautifully. but before my father and i glued it together we routered out two groves in the back of the top peice.(no pics sorry)they both start in the aprx area of where the knobs are going to be. im gunna cut out a hole in the back nd put the knobs in through the back(no pg needed). one of the groves goes to the pups and the other goes to the bridge. these groves are for the wires instead of trying to drill a hole after the body is all glued up. hopefully this will make it easier to wire the bass. after tht glueing began.

i used titebond wood glue for all of you who care. let the glue set overnight nd my dad and i just finished routing out the neck pocket.

my dad did an excellent job the neck fits really snug!:hyper: i kinda need to push it in. the tuning pegs from the old fender were rounded at the top which ment the didnt lay flat on the new neck! so he took them to work nd had a guy trim them down on a lathe.

i think the came out pretty nice. gunna go up to my uncles house tommarow evening and cut it out on his band saw. i cant wait to see this finished:hyper:

I dig the new body shape. I'm very curious how the instrument will sound with a poplar body. I've thought about using it before, but never had the guts to go through with building one with poplar.

Good luck!

thanks allen from everything ive read poplar has a rather even to see i figured it would be ok.
last night i got the body all cut out on my uncle's bandsaw and sanded it down on his belt sander. pics will be up tommarow hopefully. sanded the body contur nd tested out some finishes on the scrap tonight. im leaning more towards the plain wood seal cause it shows the color of the wood of rather nice. i might end up finishing the neck like this because it has no finish as far as i can tell. any sugestions on finishes would be great.

Before you put the electronics in the body spend ten bucks on some copper shielding tape. Use it to line all the control and pickup cavities. It will really help to eliminate hum, buzzing, etc. I just finished a jazz bass and it is dead quiet! That was the first thing the guitarist in my band commented on when heard it.

+1 A few bucks in shielding before you wire it up will save you a lot of aggrivation down the road.

As for finishing: The instruments I've built have mostly been natural-wood, so I don't do a lot of staining. I've always used aerosol-can spray lacquer that you can buy at Lowes or Home Depot. Spray the individual parts separately, and definitely do the "spray/let dry/sand flat" technique many times to build up a thick coat. I'm sure there's info on this forum on how to get a good finish.

Good luck!

FYI - you'll figure this out, but when you spray lacquer, the thickness of the neck pocket will build up a couple thousandths of an inch, making the neck-heel fit even tighter. I didn't pay attention to where you live, but watch the humidity also. If it's cold and dry where you live, expect a little expansion of the wood in the summer when the body and neck absorb some moisture. The neck joint will be VERY tight then.
