First build bass for my daughter

What a great dad! When she's old enough she can look back at this thread and see all the hard work and love you put into it....and will hopefully laugh about the "christening" part :)
When my little girl was born we thought for sure she'd be a pianist....then it became, well....maybe a guitar player....she kind of liked them both. Once she found the bass, she was completely hooked and hasn't looked back. It's been the greatest thing ever! I wish that for you and your daughter too.
Can't wait to see the finished product.

I do hope she picks up bass...there's no way I can build a piano! but if she doesn't pick up bass I suppose she'll lend it to me indefinitely :D
We are hoping she likes to express herself artistically (my wife's a choreographer).
I'm hoping to maybe giving the bass a hand-rubbed tung oil finish, so that my daughter can help with the process. She's only 3 still so she might not remember it in the future, but at least she'll have the pictures.
as far as I know tung oil is not toxic at all, but I'll have to ask her doctor just in case.

this weekend I started with the actual inlaying. Not done yet though, hope to finish it this week. Here's an idea of what I've been doing:

First, traced the inlays on the fingerboard: (I need to get a white pencil)

next go at it with the dremel:

Not a perfect fit, but it'll have to do:

the pieces are so small, particularly the "tails" are so thin, there's no way I can carve to a perfet fit. I don't think there's a dremel bit smaller than the one I'm using. On the picture above, I tried carving the tail with a knife and chisel, but still can't do it perfect, the wood is too hard for the knife and the chisel not thin enough.

So I fill the hole with dust from the fingerboard

and get some glue in there

I'm getting the hang of it. the 12th fret will be a bit more tricky though...

by the way, you might notice that it seems as though i put glue all over the place and not only inside the hole. I've been told the glue dries faster if you put some nylon over it, I think it's something to do with it not getting air.
so what I do is put a couple drops of glue as needed, then cover it with a piece of nylon from a nylon bag.

I needed to share this with Talkbass: Yesterday I was working on a design for a logo/ headstock inlay to identify the bass.
I asked my daughter to give it a try, and this is what she came up with: it won't end up on the bass, but it gives me hopes as to her love for bass!!!!

This is very raw, and of course still needs a lot of work, but the full name doesn't quite make it for me. I think the big Y is better... it's got a lot more to do with the fretboard inlays...
I'd be trying this in either brass or mother of pearl... still haven't made up my mind.
Young is my family name by the way.
Any thoughts?

made some progress on the 12th fret inlay.

First cut out the wood with the dremel:

and then fit in the outer oval and glued it in place:

the inner pieces are too small, so I decided to first stick them in paper so as to make sure they're in the right place:

and placed that on the fretboard:

and then filled it with ebony dust and glue:

And also filled the outside gaps with fretboard dust.
So this is my fretboard right now:

Now I need to sand it all down level. Looking forward to doing that and move on to fretting!

Thank you Dave! I hope to have pics of the finished inlay work soon... I did sand down a bit of the 12th fret inlay, and I think it's turning out quite well.
The contrast of the mother of pearl against the black sorrounding it shows all the sanding imperfections though... still not too bad I think, the pieces were really small and hard to make them perfect. you'll see my point when I get the pictures.

I absolutely love the inlays. I had my doubts about the 12th fret, but that is just plain stunning! I also really like the random aspect of the fret markers.

Overall, this is a really great build. Love the design, woods, approach, and the goal. The3 "christening" will be a great way to embarrass her years from now when she's surpassing your playing level.

Thanks, for sharing your progress with us and I'm looking forward to seeing this completed.
